Well, it depends on what your perspective is.

I've come to suspect that pretty much everyone is an idiot at one stage, and a victim of idiocy at another.

People have to deal with idiots, manipulators, greedy jerks (and jerkettes) and so on, in order to become knowledgeable enough to recognize them and pick the better ones.

Some victimizers and jerks get so good at what they do, that they stick with being swine for a very long time.

Some people find it's fun or "profitable" to play victim, too.

And there are many who have been emotionally injured, as you say, and will always show the effects, through sadness, skepticism, suspicion, or anger.

And of course, there are some who just tell you they are among the sadder but wiser, as a somewhat snotty way of driving you off, simply because they aren't attracted.

All kinds.
