people so nieve to think our govd. would really raid the farms and pick up the illegals it doesnt happen they wouldnt be so foolish, and it isant the farm workers they are targeting, and to think that there isant enough legal immigrants and citizens to do the job is absolutely ludicris what it means is the wealthy farmers will have to start shareing the big profits they have been enjoying.

Helloooooo...why is it that some people think that legal Americans want or will be pickers? Picking of fruits and veggies is a hard job that is...has...and always be a very low paying job. Thay cannot afford to pay higher wages. We would not be able to afford to buy it.
By the way...I have been a picker...I was raised by a family that NO JOB WAS BENEATH ME. I have hoed and picked peanuts, very hot and hard job. I hasve been a picker of strawberries, blackberries, for hire, not for my own consumption. This a business that will always be cheap labor. It has to be. The high cost of packing and delivering and selling is that which cannot be much higher. It ia already to the point that poor and low to middle income people are undernourished when it comes to fresh veggies and fruits. It is just not affordable to those people. It is said it would cost up to 70% of their income for poor and lower income people to eat what they need.

Now....this topic says...illegal immigrants....not Mexican. Now illegal mean any race or creed or color, does it not? Then why is it that this has only addressed Latinas. Mexicans mostly. There are more than Mexican Latinas.

I tried to work a job recently, some may remember that. It was fresh veggie packaging plant? 98% Latinas. When I was there, there were only about 5 whites and I believe I only saw 2 or 3 black people and about 3 to 5 oriental This company imploys about 250 people. I imagine tyhat this company is in trouble. Not because it hired Latinas, but because it can't find anyone to work that job. It is horrible conditions, chemicals, freezing cold. I lasted three days and I am not soft by no means. I could not see, hard to breathe, bones frozen, it took hours to warm up. There were 18 of us hired the same day and I lasted 3 days. Many would not even come back after being hired. I was in touch with the only three white "legal" people that were left and they lasted about a week and a half. Two men trying very hard to make 7 dollars an hour. They started one out at 6 and 6.50 an hour. Everyone. No benefits, few raises to be expected. By anyone.
The only ones that held the jobs in higher positions were Latinas. Why? Because they overcome and need the jobs bad enough to indure what many cannot.
The parking lot there is nearly empty.
I wonder what is going to happen to all those pre packaged veggies that are sent to restaurants and grocery stores? The very same salads and mixes, potato salad and coloeslaw, mixed greens, spinach, shredded carrots. cabbage. All that we take for granted.

Our economy is at risk. We have now hiring signs by the hundreds here. All ove. They do not seem to be coming down very quickly.

I do not know where some of you people think there are so many wealthy farmers at? The farmers actually made more profit years before than it does now. The American farmer is going under so quickly. The price of machinery and pesticides and fertilizer and the actual growing of it has become so expensive and they get what? A couple dollars and bushel? If there is good weather and conditions are right? Not to nmention the grasshopper invasions they indure on a regular basis.

The only reason farmers have bigger houses, most are not new, they are old and family homes. Hundreds of acres that have not been sold to industry and housing. They use their land to gain financial stability. Which many lose in the long run. The family farm is quickly becoming a thing of the past. No profit in it. Losing them to the US Government because they cannot pay the taxes and loans they needed to survive. The rich farmer.....

Alex!!???But....I luv youuuuuu... Don't hate me...because I am American. A poor American at that.

Dean:

You said that there are 12 million illegals in the US.

That's what the "mainstrem media" says.

According to sources NOT associated with the "mainstream media" the number of illegals in the US is closer to 45 million.

Call me racist or whatever, I don't really care, but it's NOT that the illegals will do jobs Americans don't want to do.

It's that illegals will do jobs CHEAPER than Americans are willing to.

No wonder business owners love illegals, and no wonder government refuses to do anything about this problem.

If anyone wants to debate what I've said, like an adult would, I'm up for that. But ignorant insults directed at me will go ignored, as those should be beneath us all here.

I'm not calling you anything Dean. Your points on the surface are well taken. But...the farmer is already in deep enough peril as to be losing their farms to the government. Because of all the things listed above.
The machinery we speak of used to be a few thousand, now are a hundred and two hundred thousand. Of which it takes more than one of.
The payments on these machines is astronomical. Also, lets see here...diesel, repairs (these things always need a diesel mechanic) the tires of substancial in cost, the procucts themselves to plant, to harvest, to clean the ground first and work it to prepare to use. These farmers are always in debt. Deep deep debt. It has become so that the farmer is among the poor. But, because they love what they do, they try to hang in there. We have witnessed many farm lands being sold in order to get out from under the debts that otherwise cannot be done.Did you know also that these cery same farmlands and family handed down jobs are being stolen right out from under the very same people that grow our food to industry? They are taking them via imminant domain. It is ludicrus.

While we are on a mission to fix things...why are we not trying as hard to find a way to help those states that are in jeopardy of having no water as we speak? We have 17 ststes that are indeed losing that battle. No water. Alabama has enough to last about 80 days. Thay are allowed about 3 hours of water a day. What about the issues right here at home that need addressed? And the power that we as internet surfers have to send out thoses messages? Swimming poools and personl home irrigation systems that are helping in that loss. What about all those needless car washes? Why is it we no longer feel that we can use our own manpower and home resourses to do these easy jobs? A car wash uses millions of gallons of water. Not to mention the pools and irrigation sysyems.
What about the overuse of yard fertilizers? The runoff of that when it rains into the streets and contaminationg water supplies and the like? We have so many important issues that need addressed before we worry about human beings wanting to work and eat...themselves.
You know?
Blflowerforyou Bless you Dean.

The reason I mentioned the fertilizer thing is become it seems to have become so terribly important to have these plush green and perfectly manicured yards. What about human life? The grass is not that important. But we will continue to use manmade pesticides to kill our resourses and man. There are natural ways to acomplish these vary same things.
We the people of America have become so self absorbed and selfish, we don't think ahead to the futures of our loved ones.

Spur, correct me if I am wrong; but you said earlier that you have been divorced ten years from this woman? But, you just called her your wife? Not that it is that important, but I thought I read that in an earlier post.

I was also married to a man that I learned later after I fell in love with him was half Latino and half french? Odd enough in itself. His mom when I met her threw me. She is the very hard to understand spanish speaking woman. Short in stature and dark wavy hair. He was 6 ft 6 in and red headed and turned beautiful graish white. The only way I could have told he was of Spanish desent was his eyes after I looked at them in a differet light. My point is this; I do not know if she was here as an illegal woman, but I didn't care. Still don't. She was loving and brought into this world, four beautiful sons all of which did well. Her nationality made no difference to me. Her legality makes no difference to me. I love her still.
My husband was 40 when I met him. He had an older brother. That point is that after living here that long, would it not make a difference that they lived here all that time without trouble, and contributed?

WELL KAT THE ILLEGALS ARENT WILLING TO DO THE WORK SO THE FARMERS ARE DOOMED BUT I REFUSE TO SIT BY WHYLE MY JOBS ARE UNDER CUT BY ILLEGALS,AND WE ARE ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE FURTILIZERS AND SUCH BUT I AM MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE SHORTAGE OF WORK RIGHT NOW FIRST THINGS FIRST,WORRYING ABOUT POLUTION AND THE WAR IN IRAQ DOESNT HELP ME IN MY PROFESSION NOR WILL IT PAY MY BILLS,BUT THE CHEAP LABOR HAS CAUSED AN INCREASED A OVERAGE OF HOUSES AND BAD LOAN PRACTICES.I AM GLAD I DONT PAY A MORGAGE CAUSE I WOULD HAVE LOST MY HOME AS IT IS I WILL PROBABLY BE LIVING IN A TENT BY JANUARY.

Oh Dean. I surely hope not hon. I am well aware that there is being spoken of job shortages. But, here not so. So many help wanted signs. And no one taking the jobs. Small busineeses are hurting because people want and need more money to live. But small business is at peril for going under. Mine is in bad shape in a very short time. I am hurting as well. I have just purchased a small home here with my mom. We are having it so very tough at this moment. She works and makes 6 dollars and hour. I was working all the time. 7 in the morning til sometimes midnight and later. Now, no work. I am in hopes we all get better.

alex I'm surprised at you with all the Americans you claim are your friends....brokenheart

My question is why can't the farmers estimate how many workers they will need and apply for that number of permits so all the workers are legal??

It's a done deal.
As soon as the harvest is processed, you can bet your last dollar, the Fugitive Alien will either beat feet to Mexico or be caught up in the sweep.
We need to be ever vigilant and have those that are in hiding, out on the corners, or in factories using them.
As far as filling positions for the coming season. The farmers and processors are polled to see how many workers they need. The legal workers will get paid more but, the farmer, and processor will make a little less. Up til now, using Fugitive workers, they have avoided paying income tax and Social Security.
There is no shortage of Legal Migrant Workers.

#1.... Is it marked 'Illegal' somewhere visible on their person?

#2.... Will they tell you they are illegal?

#3.... How many lawsuits will this lead to when pictures are taken of CITIZENS who request that they not be photographed and are anyway?

#4.... How many 'well meaning' picture taking citizens will wind up hospitalized because someone doesn't want their picture taken?
