In the still of the night
Cold and dark
Screech of tires on tar splits the silence
Metal against metal,screeching and twisting
Painfully screaming
Glass shattering
A young girls screams pierce the silence after wards
Sitting upright in the bed
I scramble for clothes and shoes
Grabbing the phone as I run out the door
Dialing 911 as I run
Shouting at the operator
Motor vehicle accident
Number of victims unknown
Spitting out my address
Running up the lawn
Seeing now his body through the windshield
She's standing there shaking and screaming
She bolts and starts to run
I run after her calling her name
Yes..I know them
Know them well, both were just here at my home last week
A cute couple, I thought were destined to last through time
I catch her, pulling her close to me
Covered in blood but I don't care
I lead her back , sit her on the porch
Continue talking to the operator
Two victims, one dead
I can clearly see there is no life left in him
But I check any way, just in case, just in case this one time I am wrong
My breath catches, not wrong
Another young life snuffed out in the blink of an eye
I walk back over to her, now crying quietly
I sit next to her assessing the damages
Cuts, many cuts.bumps and bruises starting to form
I report what I find to the operator
Hearing the the fire whistle go off,knowing that help is on the way
Hanging up, facing her now, taking her face in my hands
I can smell it, so strong on her breath
I ask her..were you drinking?
She says no, I tell her don't lie to me hun
I know..I can smell it
She tries to run again, its starting to hit her
She killed him...in a moment that seemed to last for ever
I pull her back, holding her tight
Letting her scream into the cold night
A car pulls into the driveway
My son climbing out
Momma?? Momma are you ok??
I'm fine baby boy
Momma, who is it??
He walks over, sees her
Stops, looks at the car
Sees him, hanging out of the windshield
A low groan slips from my sons mouth
Momma..is he??
Yes baby boy he is
He looks at her, whispers.. what did you do??
My son turns and runs to the house
Slamming the door
Ambulance and fire trucks arrive
Police right behind
I tell them they will have to wait for my statement
My son needs me more than they do
I walk slowly back to the house
Head hanging down tears spilling from my eyes
Knowing my son is in pain...
Entering my home I go to my son
Reaching out for him wanting to pull him close
He pushes me away and goes to his room
I leave him alone knowing he has to have some time alone

Cherub this is heartbreaking....are you ok?

We will be ok, just need time, its not our first time through this, my son cried some tonight and I held him as he did. Time will heal us, I am more concerned about the young man's family and the young girl and her family, they will need much comfort and love in the months to come.
