Are mandatory “white privilege” courses racist? University of Alberta student fights back
Holly NicholasRebel Commentator

A student at the University of Alberta, Dorian Banman, is raising concerns about a mandatory course in the education program called Aboriginal Educational Contexts Engagement. He thinks it reflects some of the more radical components of the Idle No More movement.

The student says that instruction in the course crosses the line in suggesting such things as “only white people can be racist” and that “being white makes a person naturally racist.”

Dorian has followed the appropriate steps by contacting university officials but feels that he hasn’t received an appropriate response.

He also feels that the course content violates the university’s Discrimination and Harassment Safe Disclosure and Human Rights policies.

White privilege courses aren’t just restricted to the University of Alberta. The University of Calgary hosts a page explaining “white privilege” and “whiteness” and schools across the United States are sending students to white privilege conferences where they offer course credits for attendance, and breakout sessions are designed for middle and high school students. The University of Michigan also now offers a required class on white privilege.

Leave it to the left to cry bigotry while using a bigoted concept. Considering this course is required material for future teachers, our kids will be sure to learn about all of the “privilege” held by those white guys who ended slavery and who fought and died in wars to preserve our rights and freedoms, right?

it would depend upon what degree program its a art of

if its mandatory basic, regardless of degree,, yes its over the lin

if its a part of a specific degree in something involving social interactions,, it makes sense

I don't feel guilt over being able bodied or natural born

but I do understand it gives me an 'advantage' over disabled or immigrant people

*The origins of the term privilege can be traced back to the 1930s, when Web Dubois wrote about the “psychological wage” that allowed whites to feel superior to black people. In 1988, Peggy McIntosh presented the idea of privilege in a paper called White Privilege and Male Privilege.

* Many people are caught up in the misconception that having privilege means you have had an easy life. This is not true. Just because you have privilege, it does not mean you haven’t experienced suffering, or that you have not worked hard for what you have. It simply means you are not part of a group that is a target of social oppression.

** As the last line states: "It simply means you are not part of a group that is a target of social oppression"

Pppfffff... Nice try.
There is a lot out there on this subject on lots of sites, it isn't really anything new. The OP is just quick rundown for the unaware, or the oblivious & those just in denial.

The SJW's call it what they call it.

words can be so contextually sensitive , cant they?

they should rename it, race in america,,,

and then give the facts based upon history

same lesson, some will still complain, but at least it doesnt cause the sense of resentment that the two words 'white privilege' invoke

or maybe even 'historys impact today',, which could point out several countries and how oppressive pasts affect the oppressed groups today

Lots of words that say nothing.
Like some of those 1970's -1980's, preachers that went on & on & on... Until the rest of the world glazed over & ignored them. indifferent

Just because you have privilege, it does not mean you haven’t experienced suffering, or that you have not worked hard for what you have. It simply means you are not part of a group that is a target of social oppression.
Then the racist prlcks should quit saying WHITE privilege. Many groups of people who happen to be white have faced "oppression"..... they just don't use it as a crutch to get through life.
In fact, most black folks don't use racism as a crutch....they work hard....just like other folks...and make a good life for themselves.
Its just the very vocal few that get heard.....probably because they have nothing better in life to do.....or they're looking to make an easy buck..... can't lose that cash cow, no sir.

Holly Nicholas digs further into last week's story about University of Alberta student Dorian Banman, who believes a required class in the Education program is discriminatory. Holly looks into some of the course content and investigates to see what other students had to say about the course. Watch the video for the full story and to find out how you can add your voice if you share the concerns of these students.

Yes - in my experience, black people aren't more likely to become one of these nutjobs. Many black people think they are totally crazy. Like this guy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcP0WmGB78A

Studying liberal arts in college, though, *does* make you more likely to become one of these nutjobs.

The scary thing, though, is that these kinds of people have had increasing influence over college culture, and colleges are pumping out these morons.

Last time I read about it, Asian people make more money than white people in the US. You never hear about that, when people talk about various "wage gaps" that we just have to 'fix'.
