Abra
Well we might have some common points. I will never call myself a chr-stian yet I read from the same book. Your perception of it being Romanized (I would add greekenized (It's all greek to me) ) The study of the messiah and his words are far from greek mythology. I am glad you use your head.. Blessings of Shalom Abra.... Miles

I see great contrasts between your posts, Feral’s posts, and those of Spider. Personally if I were a Christian I would denounce the posts of Spider as being un-Christian-like. His posts reek of anger and hate. He’s more interested in telling people who God hates and who God rejects rather than conveying the love of God. I have never seen Spider post anything about love. Except perhaps when he’s emphasizing the conditions that God places on it.

Answer: If there is one thing I have learned it's not shove my beliefs down people's throat as spider does. What he says in nothing but truth....but how he goes about it is all wrong....and I have e-mailed him to that affect.

And hold on to your seat Abra because I totally agree that alot of people of say they are Christians well just simply are not.
So there I agree 100%

Abra wrote:

As to your quote about ‘contrasts’ I don’t see how you can contrast my version of Christianity since I never post how I would perceiving the story if I were to accept it. I’ve clearly recognized that it can’t be true so that’s all I post. Why should I bother posting potential interpretations like as if they could be true?

Answer: that is your opinion as it is others that it is complete truth......so I guess once again your saying what your way is correct and were dillusional.....And as I have stated many times....but you don't seem to either read or get a clue about....I believe in what I believe because of what my experiences and what I have SEEN by the Lord...Not what I have read but what I have experienced. So for you to say that is just as rude as what we say to you.

Abra wrote:

Just because I don’t post them doesn’t mean that I’m not aware of them. I’ve heard all of the things that you and Feral have posted many times before. You guys just sound like broken records to me. It’s not that I don’t know the versions you recite, it’s just that I’ve recognized why they make no sense.

Answer: Hmmmmm again makes no sense to you so therefore cannot be...sounds like you need to also practice what you preach.

Abra wrote:
By the way, Christianity has been highly ‘romanticized’ in the USA (as well as other places). This was vividly brought to my attention today whilst I was eating in a restaurant. They were playing Christmas music already! Anyway, it just reminded me that I need to get off the religion forums for the holidays and let the romanticists have their holidays. It’s seriously not my desire to be bursting bubbles. I only post for those intellectuals out there who are interested in hearing alternatives to mythology.

Answer: Once again your perception......and what now am I taking this wrong or not....you only post for the intellectuals out there who are interested hearing alternatives to mythology.......So only people like you and who think like you are intellectual.....hmmmmmmmmm I think not.

Abra:
It actually upsets me that the religion forums are constantly about Christianity, like as if nothing else is even worthy of consideration.

Answer: I agree with the above mentioned.

Feral wrote:
"I also think that being a Christian does hold you a little more accountable.....then some that say are wiccan."

Answer: And because I say we are accountable to each other has nothing to do with being better then anyone!!!!!!

And I have never looked down on anyone.....ever.

Abra Says:

Now you might say that this is what I do with Christianity by claiming that it's just mythology. But that’s not the case at all. I’m not saying that I’m any better than a Christian. In fact, I’m not even saying that there is anything wrong in believing in mythology. I don’t believe god cares what a person believes. All that matters is how a person behaves and that has NOTHING to do with what they believe.

Answer: It takes alot of nerve to say that and then call me arrogant. and you my sweet just keep thinking that all the matters is how a person behaves cuz you can........But if you read the Bible like you claimed then this could not just be the case.

Abracadabra: Evolution is still a theory, b/c all scientific observations are considered theories until taken as scientific law which is still questionable to many on the macro level. The theory is much more solid on the micro level but still has issues. Unfortunately, most people think that Christianity and evolution are mutually exclusive concepts but I believe that many thinking Christians accept evolution as a viable creative theory that points toward an ever creative reality. And science can become a religion (scientism) when one misplaces faith that science can explain the ultimate when science only claims to be an objective study of empirical data. God or the moment prior to the Big Bang (or endless other cosmological theories about creation or the beginning of the universe) cannot be "proven" and some amount of faith is put into any theory about such matters.

I just think it's important to remember that there are actual Christian scientists out there who affirm an evolutionary process from the Big Bang on and that think of God not as a being, but as Being-itself.

Abra in all of his seemingly assults on religion does try to make us question what we believe. To prove what is you believe is a biblicall concept.. ( study to show yourself approved ) Just why was this inspired for us if the prophesies of a religion which would try to immulate yet be an imposter imposed on us by the one who it is said would come as an angel of light. So I would say anything whether you consider it rude or thought provoking is for your own good. As rom 8:28 tells us. The romanizing of the bible is very true. The Christmas story is a record not a celebration. We are told to remember a mans life not his birth. Many examples can be seen through out the scriptures the most profound being our saviors own cousin John the Baptist getting his head cut off as a birthday present. Then again if we look at the scriptures with the shepards being in the fields we known Dec 25th could not be Yahshua's birthday. But if we look at other festivals or if we just open our encyclepedia we can see where the celebration comes from. Abra's comments are insightful. Then of cource now we can also say that this time of year is commercialized as our merchants without the outrages spending of the population would put them out of business. While many not all teach our little ones it is alright to lie as long as it is a innocent child who totally trusts you. Then lieing is all in good fun. Now look that up in the bible and see what it says. What would you better off doing? So if we are going to talk about the Holy Scriptures and what they mean then lets really read them and not refer back to this has been the way it always has been. That is the same attitude the pharasees had about Yahshua eventually leading to his death for not conforming to thier traditions.. May Yahweh's Light Always be Truth.... Miles

Eljay - to your original post

What is Christianity?

This is not an easy question to answer.

Oddly because, that which Christians 'ASSUME' is traditional, and non-changing, has indeed continued to change over the years. I have been witness to this 'evolution' firsthand.

I watched as Christians threw off the shackles that had served to segregate society for so many generations. With each step forward into a more united society, Christianity also evolved.

While society began to come toghether the Christian factions began to splinter. Those who wanted to embrace the tolerance and the acceptance of a desegregating socity formed new organizations.

Biblical interpretation, for them, became broader and the basis of their faith became strong enough to encompass a wider cross section of humanity. This meant that Christians, for the first time, were being exposed to a love and brotherhood that extended beyond a tribal mentality.

In responce, those who could not fan out in that direction, became more focused on scripture based law, as they struggled to maintain the autonomy, the bias and the fear that had once held them so tightly together.

Those who could no longer accept the segregation mindset, bowed out. Some attempted to fit into another church, but found their broad based, and often misleading belief structure, incompatible with what had been so aredently ingrained in their mind.

Others, seeing the changes and hearing other options, for the first time, began to question what they were taught.

TODAY - the way I answer What is a Christianity is not the way I would have answered in 1965, nor would my opinion have been the same between 1965 & '75, or '75 to '85.

In fact, what Christianity is, to me today, are segregated factions.

Some consisting of the fanatical, who use their evangelical platform to juge others. These are the people who openly, loudly profess their righteousness to be above others. In that righteousness they believe it is their duty to maintain their superieror status by fighting for the segregation that maintains their status in society, as good Christians.

Some consist of Christians, who profess acceptance and tolorence of others, but will not lift a finger to fight the oppression that is suffered under the religeouos regime. Theirs is a spoken word, without action to back up what they claim to accept in their hypocritical belief.

And then there are Christians who became dismayed or encumbered by, or simply tired of the dogma, the doctrine that did not reflect their truth of their heart. For them, it became about the personal connection, the faith, and not the ritual, not the bigotry, and not the continued segregation, and not even what follows this life. To them there is nothing to fear, becaue they have accepted the offering of God in the name of the Son.

For them, there is freedom to walk in the light. To hold the hand of any person, while extending their other hand to help every person to walk with them. Sharing the joys and sorrows and burdens of life as equals in the society of humanity. For them this is the freedom they were given by the sacrifice of thier God. No longer slave to the fear of the sins and the imperfections of their nature, they have claimed their freedom from religeous conviction to personal and individual bond with all that their God created and sacrificed for, in the name of love.

These are my current views of Christianity. I can only hope it continues to evolve along the same lines as the latter.

Feral I am in complete agreement with you. I fully understand that this is what the Bible says. I don’t question that in the slightest. What you seem to fail to grasp is that I don’t believe that the Bible is the word of god. Period.

Not only that, but my answer to what Christianity has become in the last century would not be the same answer if I were to say what it was centuries ago.

Centuries ago Christianity as a very authoritative power that worked along side and sometimes was in fact the ruling government (even if via the power of a King). The churches were the judge, jury and executioner of the law. Well the people who actually did the executions were most likely not the actual priests etc, but they were directed to perform the executions by the church authorities.

Today Christianity has become something totally different. It’s more of like a society club than a political power. In fact the only time it becomes political is when the individual practitioners become political activists using Christianity as the “justification’ for their extremism.

The authoritarian Church of the past is dead. What we see in it’s wake is the dying aftermath that will eventually dissipate into the background and slowly fade away. It’s a dead religion just smoldering and making a lot of smoke but no longer has any real fire to offer. Historically it’s on it’s way out, finally. It was a terrible beast in its heyday. Very bloody, cruel and incompassionate. I'm glad to see it finally go down the tubes.

Abra, you have written the beginning, may the ending be as I had previously posted.

Christianity can't be defined by man, only by God. Man has proven over and over throughout generations how he makes himself the center instead of God. If a person is seeking to know what God meant, then that person needs to ask God directly. God promises seek and you will find, ask and He will answer. God also states that God is spirit and those that worship must worship in spirit and in truth. I accept the Word of God (Bible, Torah, scriptures) as being divinely inspired by God. That means you aren't going to use man's reasoning to dissuade me, only God's spirit will change my mind -- and He has on a number of topics. My life is spent learning what God means when He has said something, not what man means. For everything every individual has heard about God, you will be held accountable, whether you believe it or not. In simple terms, everyone will be without excuse. As a "Christian" we are commanded, not suggested, not asked if we'd care to, commanded to go and preach the Gospel (the good news) to those who have not yet heard. It is not our responsibility to force them to believe, that is left up to God to tug at their hearts and draw them in by His love. Our job is merely to present the information. God is a gentleman, He will never strong arm anyone. If you choose to walk away from Him, He allows you to go. But He doesn't stop inviting until you've taken your last breath. The invitation is always there.

Of course all this is based on my own personal beliefs. The Word of God states let each be fully persuaded in his own mind. My job is to present the information, what you do with it is up to you. The motivation is that all can share in the peace in knowing who God is and fullness that He offers to everyone. Peace in the midst of trials. Who in this life doesn't face problems and challenges. He desires to be there to help - not a magic wand - a guide.

It amazes me the amount of animosity that surrounds this topic. If you disagree, so be it, go your own way.

In the end, the only question asked is what did you do with my Son, Jesus Christ.

Leah, apparently, either God is playing a serious game of telephone or is purposely responding to the same questions with different answers.

There are those who say they have been told by God the answer to their prayer and it is to ..... which is often in conflict with what God seems to have told another.

MMM mmmm - nope, can't say I trust that what God would disclose to a human, would be what God disclosed after the human interpreted it.noway

To all... much respect to each and every one of you... and your belief system...

To answer the original question... I believe that it is much simpler than it seems...

Christian = christ-like

Understanding the love... welcoming it... feeling it... knowing it... living it... sharing it... the pure and positive love in this universe... THAT is what I believe in...

Surround yourself with good things and good people and you will surround yourself with happiness and love...

Live...Learn...Laugh...Love

Christian is to be as Creative soul put it Christ-like, As a christian first and foremost you have to have the mindset of christ.

1.Believe that Jesus was who he said he was. {The Son of God}
2.Do not be fickle.
For God, lukewarm isn't warm enough!
Rev. 3:14-16
"And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, 'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness the Beginning of the creation of God: "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth."
The great danger of being lukewarm is that it is easy to believe you are all right. A lukewarm person thinks: "Well, at least I'm not cold." But lukewarm isn't warm enough for God. He will spew us out of His mouth unless we repent.

3.Follow the Ten Commandments.

4.Be a witness

Those are just starters but as you dive further into what it is to be a Christian you get people who believe that speaking in tonuges is wrong {baptists} Believe that sprinkling as a baby will save you {catholics} [note from me: it won't save you because you have to make that decision as an Adult].
other things like "you can pray for a soul to get out of hell" [not true] it is things like this that split and confuse people because the devil will always find a way to twist the truth.
people who faction off from true christianity will always twist pieces of the bible to make they're own points {david koresh of the Branch Davidians} people who are not really christians who are there to lead people away from the truth.

For me the term Christian means, accepting Jesus as personal Saviour and wanting to live our life for Him. Believing Jesus is the ONLY begotton son of God. He was crucified on the cross for our sins, buried in a borrowed tomb, raised from the dead on the third day, and now sits at the mighty right hand of God.

I have no idea...because I prefer not to label and box people into 'us' and 'them' scenarios...

Quite frankly, who cares?

If x identifies themselves as Christians, and y identifies themselves as Muslim, and z defines them selves as Pagan....that's their business as far as I am concerned.

I don't understand this whole labelling concept.

I have Buddhist/Taoist on my profile, because they are the closest philosophies to who I identify with...

Am I a straight, ridgy didge Buddhist? Nope.

Am I a straight ridgy didge Taoist? Nope.

Just me, is all I am...and accept and RESPECT all for their personal needs to identify with something...

Isn't that the basic precept of being HUMAN, respect?
