Actually, it's a relic tradition from the days of pocket watches. It used to be larger to fit the watch. Some manufactures pretend it's for coins, but it's not useful for them. I know, I tried.

Yea, but what's the use in this present generation when chain watches are out of vogue well, they obviously keep it as it is the original design. u can put key, coin, sth small that you dont want to lose
