33 Senators Voted Against English as America 's Official Language June 6, 2007
On Wed, 6 June 2007 23:35:23 -0500, "Colonel Harry Riley USA ret" wrote: Senators, Your vote against an amendment to the Immigration Bill 1348, to make English America's official language is astounding. On D-Day no less when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock character and principles of America . I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens. I don't much care where you come from, what your religion is, whether you're black, white or some other color, male or female, democrat, republican or independent, but I do care when you're a United States Senator, representing citizens of America and vote against English as the official language of the United States Your vote reflects betrayal, political surrender, violates your pledge of allegiance, dishonors historical principle, rejects patriotism, borders on traitorous action and, in my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator... impeachment, recall, or other appropriate action is warranted. Worse, 4 of you voting against English as America 's official language are presidential candidates: Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama. Those 4 Senators vying to lead America but won't, or don't have the courage, to cast a vote in favor of English as America's official language when 91% of American citizens want English officially designated as our language. This is the second time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as political hacks... unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualified to serve as President of the United States. If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a back-lash so stunning it will literally rock you out of your panties... and preferably, totally out of the United States Senate. The entire immigration bill is a farce... your action only confirms this really isn't about America ; it's about self-serving politics... despicable at best. Never argue with an idiot; they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." ~ anonymous The following senators voted against making English the official language of America : Akaka (D-HI) Bayh (D-IN) Biden (D-DE) Wants to be President? i really think that making the english the "official" language (isnt it already?) is redundant and really just a political potshot at pro-immigration policies

Actually the U.S. doesn't have an official language. English is the accepted language of the land but not the official language of the land. Unlike Canada where we have two official languages, English and French. The founding fathers never thought of it, no doubt because they all spoke English.

Personlly, I see an underlying issue here for the poster but in defense, European countries have many languages flowing constantly throughout the country, it does not define them as not European it is the melting of all cultures, races, backgrounds, etc..... What is the big deal if America "the melting pot" has no political stigmatation of language? Not a big deal, REALLY it is not.

Personally I agree. I can't see the big deal about it. The only reason that we have The Official Languages Act here was to appease the separatists in Quebec. But the fact that there is no 'official' language in U.S. certainly does put a dent in the arguement that I've heard that immigrants to U.S. must learn English as it is the official language of the U.S.

Spoo! Forgot something. The Col. is dead wrong. Soldiers didn't fight etc for the rights of 'english speaking Americans but for the rights of all Americans.

For crying out loud, we are paying them to have this stupid debate?

no official language cost big bucks
without one you then have to print everything in all languages and provide translators for those that do not speak the language thus not giving those new to the country incentive to learn English thus causing a hardship in the workplace especially for emergency services personnel but hey what do i know |
Creates employment also.
Court translators for example. Last I looked nothing stopped somebody from learning another language or stopped someone with a different mother tongue from working in EMS (if their english skills were there) |
Well Adj, you do have a point there
and when taxes are up because they need to pay them
are maybe some do not mind the high taxes and like you said --- Last I looked nothing stopped somebody from learning another language ---- they could learn english |
which would create employment
only it would be teachers instead of translators give a fish they eat for a day teach to fish they eat whenever they want |

Most of them do. From what I've noted, here anyway, those that don't learn English (or French for here) are those that are older and set in their ways. The middle aged and under generally do learn English (or French) to get along in jobs, school etc. The situation can't be that much different there.

i think the official language should be "spanglish" its what half the country speaks anyway! LOL

If I remember correctly there was a thing a few years ago about getting Esperanto as official language. I'd never heard of Esperanto till then.

Everything should just be left how it is, we are doing okay so far in the whole language department. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Languages in the US:
English 82.1%, Spanish 10.7%, other Indo-European 3.8%, Asian and Pacific island 2.7%, other 0.7% (2000 census) note: Hawaiian is an official language in the state of Hawaii A long ways from half!! |

And 33 senators is a long ways from passing a bill fury!!!

I don't see this as a sleeping dog. I think Mexican-Americans will be increasingly important/influential in America's future. Many here in san diego are very proud of their cultural heritage and identity - which is good - but some are actually proud of the fact that they don't know English. They listen to Spanish-language radio, TV, speak Spanish on the job, at school, at social events, at the grocery store all here in on US soil. All official government communications and services are already available in Spanish. It is very easy for someone to get by and never learn English.
I admire their cultural identity, allegiance and preservation - but when it comes to -language- I think, as a practical matter, we should have a national language, and people should be expected to be ABLE to use it, even if they choose not to, most of the time. My friends from india say all educated people there speak at least 3 languages - their regional language, the national language, and English (for economic reasons). If we don't address this now, we will increasingly be two separate people, speaking two separate languages. Oh, I think its great that Hawaiian is an official language of Hawaii - is English not? |
