Well it depends who, like so many have said, but most of the time it really doesn't dignify a response except to deprive them the object of their disaffection. If you know they are trying to get your feelings hurt just look at them dead in the eye; chuckle a little, and say "Well I must me doing something right. That you hate me hardly puts me in and exclusive club because my guess is you hate anyone you can't bully." Then go back to whatever you are doing like they do not exist until you can get out of their nasty space safely. Now if they have a legit reason to let you have it, even if saying you hate someone is so over the top, just say "I am very sorry you feel that way. We can talk about it later when we both have some time to think and work things out." Then back off, safely, and let them have their space. Keep in mind Love and Hate are often twins. Very few people will hate you if you have not hurt them or make them think of someone who seriously has. The latter is kind of a loosing battle but being different from te object of their disdain may help you win the war.

Usually the feeling is mutual like my neighbours low flying helicopter early in the mornings and then me deciding to cut some wood with a chainsaw in the middle of the night

Humm would tell them to grow up I don't live my life for them... And no longer associate with them... Well now unless it is a kid which that is something I would expect a kid to say not an adult. .Then I would sit them down and explain to them that Hate is a awful big word and no one should ever say they hate someone.. dislike yes but hate is something that is taught... Words have more power then some realize and should think twice before speaking at times.. I second what she said.
