I just saw it and it is amazing! I loved it but there are some things I couldn't get out of my mind. I just kept thinking while watching it that it is basically a rip off of the first movie.

First you have someone hiding something in a droid to hide it from the Empire err The First Order to get it to the Rebel err Resistance and that droid is stranded and crossing a desert planet lost. They Rey speeding in a land speeder across the desert just like Luke in the first movie and having Luke Skywalker in exile like Obiwan Kenobi and a Masked Villain who in all ways is trying to mimic Darth Vader who answers to another Villain his master through a Holocon.

Then there is the Star Killer Base that is a rip off of the Death Star, Han even makes a joke about it and they have to penetrate a small base on the moon to get the shields down so the Rebels err Resistance can hit a small target on the Death err Star Killer Base.

It was basically a copy of the first movie with a lot more creativity and they killed Han Solo, one of the most popular characters in Star Wars History in the first one to build I think JJ Abrams was a horrible choice. C'mon the guy who wrote, directed and produced the two Star Trek movies making a Star Wars, HELL NO. He FAILED. He had all the talent and the sky was the limit with creativity and what made Star Wars great was taking chances, not repeating the same thing over and over.

If you were a true Star Wars fan you will understand what I am talking about. Either way it is still an amazing movie and I plan to se it again. It just could have been better!

Some critics are disappointed.
After everything I read, I wouldn't pay to see it.

Even Yahoo has a big write up
" 5 things wrong with Star Wars.." And that is in the last 8 minutes.
Lots of articles, are more or less saying the same thing.

VOX is saying, " Critics are going too easy on Star Wars "(3 days ago)

* Waiting for RedBox...maybe indifferent *

Look at the movie ' The Thing '.
The 1st one was a classic in B & W
The 2nd one, exciting in color w/ some special effects.
The 3rd .. WTF ? Was that.. grumble

If your going to go in to a thread about a movie and you haven't seen the movie and expect there not to be spoilers then your an idiot.

It's worth seeing, it really is but JJ Abrams really botched a great opportunity.

I am also willing to bet that Supreme Leader Snoke is actually the Sith Lord Darth Plageus, former master to the Emperor mentioned in Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith. Every time Snoke is on they play the same song from Episode 3 when Palpatine talks about Darth Plageus and the title of the track is Plageus and on his face there is a burn mark from per haps a light saber and Snoke looks like the Emperor did after the Force Lightning destroyed his appearance.

Not to mention every time Plageus was talked about in Episode 3 he was referred to as wise and BOTH Kylo Ren and General Hux refer to Snoke as wise.

Also if you look at the pictures of Darth Plageus they are almost identical to the appearance of Supreme Leader Snoke.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Is a decent movie for kids.

Most especially for those that haven't really seen or cared about the Star Wars universe or movies.

Kids that will see it and it begins their star wars experience and knowledge rather than as a sequel they have to shoehorn into their already formed star wars paradigm.

Most especially for parents to see with their kids.
Parents having previous experience with Star Wars and their kids fresh to the franchise.

I just kept thinking while watching it that it is basically a rip off of the first movie.

Do you really believe any Star Wars movie is in any way original?
Do you not read the internets? Just type in "George Lucas ripped off" as a Google search.

Star Wars (any of the movies in the franchise) is a huge ripoff of a bunch of other stuff.
A lot of the stuff ripped off is from other big movies and pop culture shows.
Star Wars is a huge franchise.
Why wouldn't it rip off from itself?
Although, I think it's an attempt at symmetry more than ripping off.

JJ Abrams really botched a great opportunity.

He really did seeing as it was such a huge failure at the box office.
Only, what, over a billion dollars?

It's easier to come up with a better story when someone hands you one to improve and you're only creating the story you personally wish to see without any real limitations to your own imagination.

It's not easy to come up with a story that will entertain if not satisfy millions to billions of people, be the story you want, fit into a huge universe of canon, constrained by time and budget limitations, dependent upon dozens to hundreds to thousands of people working well together, reliant upon all their input and efforts, while also setting up future stories that are going to be done by other people.

JJ Abrams didn't create a Star Wars sequel that I personally loved and can't get enough of.
But in no way did he "botch" it.

Just as easily as you can say he "should" have done something you have to realize he "could" have done something far worse. e.g. Bring back Jar Jar Binks and Watto as main characters hunting down a rogue ewok movement called "ewok lives matter" right after high school all with Rey as the middle of a love triangle.

Also if you look at the pictures of Darth Plageus they are almost identical to the appearance of Supreme Leader Snoke.

He also looks kinda like Gollum.
And Frodo's sword glowed kinda like a light saber.
I wonder what kind of speculation can be had there.

I just read that George Lucas is not happy at all with how Star Wars Episode 7 came out and he referred to Disney as "White Slavers". Apparently he was in on the early planning of the movie and was not happy with how the project was going and realized that Disney was just going to do what they wanted no matter what he wanted to he just left all together.

George Lucas sorry for 'white slaver' comment

Lucas sold the Star Wars franchise and his Lucasfilm production company to Disney in 2012
George Lucas has apologised for remarks he made in an interview in which he referred to Disney as "white slavers".
Lucas, the creator of the original Star Wars films, sold the franchise to Disney for $4.05bn in 2012.
Last week, the filmmaker told US TV host Charlie Rose he had sold his "kids... to the white slavers".
In a statement issued on Thursday, he said he "misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy". He added that he had "great respect for the company".
The latest Star Wars film, The Force Awakens - a sequel to the original trilogy and directed by JJ Abrams - was made by Disney.

"I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger's leadership," Lucas said, in his statement.
"Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered in the US on 14 December 2015
"I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks.
"Most of all I'm blown away with the record-breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of JJ and Kathy."
In the hour-long interview, broadcast in the US on Christmas Day, Lucas appeared to question Disney's choice of direction with the new film.
"They wanted to do a retro movie. I don't like that," he said.
"Every movie, I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."
He added: "They weren't that keen to have me involved anyway, but if I get in there, I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I want them to do. And I don't have the control to do that any more."
"When you break up with somebody... You have to put it behind you and it's a very, very, very hard thing to do," Lucas told Rose.
"These are my kids... All the Star Wars films. I loved them, I created them, I'm very intimately involved in them. I sold them to the white slavers that take these things."
The Force Awakens premiered in the US and Europe earlier this month, and is currently the ninth highest-grossing film of all time, even before its nationwide release in China on 9 January.
The film, whose cast includes original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, as well as British leads Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, became the fastest film to take $1bn (£674m) at the global box office last weekend.

Force Awakens is a good movie. It isn't great but it is very good. I don't mind the pattern that Abrams followed or the similarity it has with Episode 4. This movie is a good start to a franchise that needed it after Lucas bombed with Episodes 1-3 (although 3 was a nice effort).

The thing I liked most about this movie is the "darker" tone it has to it. You can thank Kasdan and Abrams for that, and it works here. The one thing Abrams did that I absolutely love is how he develops Kylo Ren throughout the movie. What he becomes in the next film will be interesting to me.

Well.. I have to agree with the oP. . Why they insist on rehashing.. what has already being done.. is beyond me.. it is like Lucas wanted to reintroduce all the original characters..
Just so we can say goodbye to them once again..lol... I would have like to seen solo become more of a mentor to the new characters.... have him give the new characters the keys to the Millenium Falcon. .. and then simply say well if you ever need any advice.. are you find yourself in trouble you know where to find me.. then simply disappear.. you have a new Luke Skywalker.. in this new x-wing fighter pilot... there's just too many things wrong with this movie to list.. I will say the movie has become more epic... the visuals... the scope of the movie that is... you get a sense for the actual size of the spacecrafts. ... they're doing the same thing in the new movie .. Independence Day.. louder bigger better
