(CNN) - Turkey's cabinet will convene an emergency session Sunday after Kurdish rebels killed at least 12 Turkish soldiers and wounded 17 more near Turkey's border with Iraq and Iran on Sunday, a Turkish government source told CNN.
A short time after that attack in Hakkari Province, a wedding convoy tripped a landmine on a road near the clashes in Hakkari province, injuring 12 people, the source said.

The landmine is believed to have been planted by rebels from the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, the source said.

Shortly after the attack on the soldiers, Turkish forces responded by killing 23 PKK rebels in southern Turkey, according to a statement on an official government Web site.

The Turkish government source declined to offer details surrounding the outbreak of the violence staged by PKK rebels.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul will preside over the emergency cabinet meeting in Ankara, which will be attended by the country's top military brass -- including the chief of armed services Gen. Yasar Buyukanit -- the government source said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also slated to attend the meeting.

While Sunday's violence took place inside Turkey's borders, it comes amid tense times with neighboring Iraq where PKK rebels have launched cross-border attacks on Turkey.

Turkey's parliament last week passed a measure that enables its military to launch an incursion into northern Iraq and chase down Kurdish rebels, which it blames on a number of terrorist attacks.

More ****, thats all...grumble grumble

Bush and his policies will screw us again....

70% of all supplys for American Troops in Iraq are coming through Turkey!!!

If Turkey attacks, there is nothing Bush can do about it!
All this fighting in Iraq is bad enough, but we never had to worry over the Kurdish State much!

So, the Bible is wrong? 2500 years of history in the making and still the plan moves forwarde. Why did the British get out in the early 1900s? Why couldn't the people in the region advance themselves? Why does Isreal face such animosity for having restored the desert and coastal swamps into a garden once again after centuries of apathy, neglect and dis-interest? Why, and this is very controversially charged, didn't we just leave Saddam in there to police the balance of power? He Killed too many, yes, but we must admit he understood the insanity and anarchy that stews just below the surface in the Middle East!!. No one in the region wants another Beirut in their neighborhood, but worse is coming and far worse is foretold.

Fanta's comment "Turkey's parliament last week passed a measure that enables its military to launch an incursion into northern Iraq and chase down Kurdish rebels, which it blames on a number of terrorist attacks."

This vote in Turkish parliament came one day after the democrat house committee voted to condemn Turkey for their actions 90 years ago regarding genocide of the Armenians. This vote was responsible the the Turkish government recalling their ambassador to the US and immediately decreased Turkey's interest in cooperating with the interests of the United States in this area. The vote was ill advised and the members had been cautioned about the risks and concerns. It seems that the committee had no regard for the international interests of the United States in this instance.

Personally I think sticking your thumb in the eye of someone who is helping and cooperating with you and your interests is stupid, particularly if your reason is regarding something 90 years ago.

I think Turkey has a beef in both cases, the actions by committee in the House, and the attacks by Kurds across their border.

There are two groups of Kurds in the area, one trying to develop their region including a political and social structure, and another, bend on developing a separate Kurdish state. The separatists have been actively fighting Turkish and Iran interests in the area for a long time. It seems the matter is getting much worse. Keeping the Turkish out of battles with the Kurds is in the interest of the US and Iraq. Obviously others in the region may feel differently, otherwise the insurgent Kurd groups would not be getting the funding they need.

Maybe it would be a good time to ask where their funding comes from.
