What kind of music you enjoy should not be a deciding factor in whether people like you or not!! It is hard to believe someone would even attempt to make a judgement with that as one of the qualifiers!! Everyone should be allowed to listen to the music of their choice!!

What's pathetic is when someone decides they have the right to give you a hard time over your own personal preferences. It's nobody's business but yours, and, unless you're holding a gun to their heads and forcing them to listen to the music you like, they should just keep their mouths shut and leave you alone.

The people who are actually worth dealing with, will allow you to be yourself and will accept you for who you are. They don't have to like your music, your religion, your clothes, whatever, but they will respect you enough to let you be who you want to be, without being critical or judgmental.

Sounds like those people are the ones who are pathetic. I would drop them and look for some new friends. Some real friends.
