Our anthem is prolly not the most beautiful, but yeah, it makes me proud whenever I hear it.

Other than that I know that
- God Shaves the Queen (isn't that woman lazy? And wot when you get yourself a king???)
- Mathilda Keeps on Waltzing (yes, I know that ain't the Oz anthem)
- and there's Spanking with the Banner.

I wouldn't know our neighbours' anthem (German, Belgian), I think I've heard the French anthem but yeah...

What about Canada? Do they Shave the Queen as well? Or did they come up with something original?

* Oh, and to be clear, I don't mean offense, just goofing around a bit *

When I am at an event and the "Star Spangled Banner" is sung with conviction it stands the little hairs on my neck up. Brings tears to my eyes. Thinking about those brave souls who stood and put their lives on the line to create this country.

"O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"

I love when a whole crowd of people sing our national anthem together. It's beautiful and moving. I truly wish more Americans appreciated the sacrifice of our founders to revolt against England. They put their families and lives on the line. It's like today, 10% of Americans are in the military and the revolution was also a small percentage of Colonists who had the courage to stand against the monarchy. But they persevered and were successful.

i was reading an article the other day which said these lines are somewhat ironic considering the state of the world today.

i'll let Americans work that one out

Hey, I understand you're upset the old gal has to shave, but no need to knock us cloggies!!
We can pronounce the "s" perfectly well as it's part of our own language too. It's the "th" that's difficult for most.
So unless it's "God Shaveth the Queen" I don't think there's a problem!

your Founders didn't sacrifice anything by revolting against the Crown.
They actually gained Independence and Selfdetermination!
Hardly a "Sacrifice"!

Yeah, but thing is, I've never ever seen a Dutchie slip a herring down his throat that way. Seriously, never. The only time I've seen it was when we were showing our UK friends how it's done. Which is silly, cos I'd never seen it done myself. I think it's something from the olden days, now a tourist thing?
APart from that, I  herring! But I do eat it with cutlery. And lots of chopped onion. (You call that raw or salted herring??)

i've seen it done in Brielle, on rockanje beach and in spijkenisse... it was 20 years ago though, maybe the younger generation prefer dunkin donuts or some other crappy American conglomerate

Well, needless to say I don't date anyone from Spijkenisse, Hellevoetsluis, and I'll now add Brielle and Rockanje to that list too laugh
I've seriously only seen it done by English people: my ex and our friends. All from Essex. Maybe put Essex on the list of "do not date" as well? lol

never met too many people from Essex, thankfully but that's your choice, you might live to regret it one day

anyway back to anthems, does anyone else have a favourite?

and a bit of trivia, how many national anthems have no words and can you name the countries?
