Exhileration could be heard,
In every single word,
Though others didn't hear
Or understand...
Oh what a blessing!
What a joy!
In this little
three year old boy,
When turning with a smile
putting out his hand...
Sheep goes baaa!
Look... mama!
Bunny sleeps!
Run, mommy, run!
I love you,
Hold my hand son,
Let me come down
To a very special place
I too once knew.
Slouching to the ground
She listens to the sound
Chickens clucking,
Sheep bleeting,
Roosters cackle and then dash,
His little legs jerk up,
He begins running very fast,
Running round the yard,
Catching nothing but the sun,
She smiles and is thankful,
He's having so much fun.
While he turns and looks behind...
Run, Mommy... Run!

When you adopt a child with Down syndrome, coloboma in his right eye, two holes in his heart... you feel blessed with every word he says and every joy he experiences. This is for my adopted son, Noah. I love you Buddy! Thank you for always reminding me to get down and see things from your wonderful perspective!

Usually the poetry here just goes right past me without making an impression, but this really touched my heart. Thank you for posting this.

I recently had a teacher come into my home and say to me... "well I could only understand one word he said out of the three.." She was not going to give him credit for speaking more because she didn't understand him. I just felt an injustice was being done because I know others do often understand things he says. (maybe not ALL the time... but still)

Anyway.... I'm glad I could share this with everyone here because Noah is a joy and a great reminder to count our blessings whether it's as simple as being able to talk, or see, or run.

Let's hear it for Noah ! Mystique, I taught children(our school was mixed, able bodied alongside disabled) who had all sorts of medical terminology, Downs, Fragile X,ADHA, Aspergers, the list was endless. Nothing gave me more pleasure after trying for months to "make contact" when I was rewarded with the hand of my "special " child being raised to answer a question. I frown upon the term "handicapped" Why DOES society use this term so widely, I am of the opinion that we are all handicapped in one way or another. Do I speak French, can I absail, play the piano or swim? No,then in more ways than one I am handicapped.

I have an autistic sister that my mother adopted and she is just the joy of our lives. She is so funny and she is so good natured. She is high functioning enough to hold a job. A mailroom or filing job but she hangs in there.

She has taught me many lessons in life just by her actions.
I am so proud of her.

I am still in love........ with Alex, he was 14 when I first met him, he was labeled difficult to teach by all who encountered him.I think as a baptism of fire at my then new school I was given Alex. Alex and I did not see eye to eye on the first day, he rebelled, I never did wonder why after he was told time and again that he was useless. After reading his case notes that evening when I got home, I approached him the following day, I had read that he liked computers, so I logged on to the class computer and let him "play" for a little while, he kept himself amused while I sorted the rest of the class, when I returned to him, I saw that he had Paint Shop Pro open and he had drawn a bunch of flowers ( btw, he is the reason I am now hooked on PPS). I later visited the SENCO and asked if it was possible to have Alex's lesson's on CD Rom............wish granted, Alex and I spent a happy 2 years together. I saw him recently, he's a fine young man now, HE called out to me, I did not recognise him, he is so tall now and even more handsome.Would I work with disadvantaged children again ? bigsmile YESSSSS, today I made an application for a job in a special school.flowerforyou flowerforyou flowerforyou
