The Colorado theatre massacre shooter James Holmes, who killed 24 people in his 2012 attack was sentenced today. The jury couldn't bring themselves to give Holmes the death penalty for all the lives he took so the Judge gave him the maximum, 12 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. He also got over 3,300 years added to his sentence. Hopefully this will serve as a deterrent to anyone else who plans attacks like this on innocent people.

they haven't addressed his history of mental illness, He shouldnt be roaming in the public however Im not sure he doesnt fit more into a mental institution than a prison with hardened criminals

than again, with the range of mental illness in an institution, it may not be fair to have him roaming amongst them either,,,,

The events of today were somewhat overshadowing to most other story lines, one of the panda twins died the other is well so far but to think that Hairumph going toe to toe with Ramos gets airtime and this doesn't? Wtf? It was pretty much on a loop for 3-4 hours last night with little interjected political analysis. Let's send a message to America that the carnage of that day means nothing today because a bankruptcy robber baron turned democratic mole in a republican gangbang has beef with univision.

I think it's 3318 years but I'm not sure. I only saw it go across the ticker once some other mysteriously missing story dominated the news today for obviously reasons. Aside from that which also shocked and sickened me. The point I believe even though I'm sure everyone in that courtroom knew that he'd never see the outside with 12 consecutive life's with no parole was to make the sentence as ridiculous as the crime was, perhaps a personal message to Holmes to snap him out of his 'for defense' insanity.

the 3318 was a message from the judge. Who then basically said to the defendant after the sentencing " now get out of my courtroom" to the applause of family member of those killed.

what was missing from the defendant was that smart *** smirk on his face when he got caught. Seems he is now seeing the error of his ways

No, the Death Penalty would be a deterrent. This is a very smart and dangerous psychopath who played the system and the jury.

Actually this happened a week ago and it was big news. I know because I remember how disgusted I was with the jury.

The Judge was not happy with the decision. He was making sure that there is no way he could wiggle his way out and become free one day. It's pretty common when a Judge disagrees with a jury's decision.

They began deliberations, that made the news (on air). I'm perfectly aware of many people's ill wishes for that p.o.s. But part of me thinks that was part of his plan. That they would have done what they did to the guy in Louisiana. Glad that fell through. If they had given him death, it would have been the same thing instead of suicidebycop, prolonged suicide by jury. He won't even get that. Part of me hopes they dump him in general population but another part of me hopes they keep him on life support for a few hundred years but we all know that won't happen. That would fall under cruel and unusual.
Both alternatives are deterrents but people that commit these mass/serial murders don't give a crap about deterrents or consequences. At least not until they drop the soap. He'll suffer.

prisons are a country club nowadays, where the gangsters go to learn how to be better gangsters...

3300 years? Nah. He got sentenced to 40 years + in a warm cell, three meals a day, and none of lifes stresses like mortgages, car payments, working a paying job, raising kids, etc etc.

He'll have access to education, entertainment, and even a few pen pals I'm sure. Someone will want to interview him for a book, or a movie, maybe the occasional newspaper article. No doubt he'll be in a stressful environment, and will need his head on a swivel for years to come. Of course he could just shank somebody in prison and then get the 'don't mess with me' thing out of the way early. He could also just go big, and actually waste a prisoner so that he gets solitary and never has to worry about it again. What are you going to do? Give him ANOTHER 100 years?

The legal system deludes itself in that it thinks it's punishing people. IF prison is the best life the loser/loner could have ever have hoped for, then we did him a favor. Only people who WANT to be outside the prison are the ones actually punished when you put them inside.

If you really want to seriously deter people from committing serious crimes, then you need serious punishments. We tried to 'civilize' the death penalty by calling certain methods cruel and unusual. Well, duh-uh, they're SUPPOSED to be cruel. The last moments of the criminal should be exactly as it was for the innocent victims who saw the muzzle flash that ended their life, or saw the hammer coming down on their skull, or felt the blade enter their body for the first 20 wounds. The prisoner should have fear, should feel panic, should feel excruciating pain, should have the victims experience.

Bring back harsh, shocking, and brutal methods of death for prisoners like the gas chamber. Make the videos available to cops to show to gang bangers, and those they deem at risk to commit murders like drug dealers or wife beaters. Scare the living crap out of these people so that they just for a moment seriously question their current criminal vocation. THEN you offer them a way out. Job training, upgraded education, apprenticeships, etc.

If I can spend $50,000 a year for two years to train a kid as an electrician or plumber or mechanic such that they can start to make a decent wage, I've taken them off the street and saved almost $2,000,000 on a life time in prison.

I'm NOT a 'hug a thug' kinda guy, but if people seriously 'get' the fact that a death sentence WILL be a gruesome, painful, and truly horrible death, then self preservation starts to kick in. The 'hard core' thug? Nah. He's gone and won't be saved. He'll take his chances of not ever getting caught. It's the people who can be tipped in either direction that you have a chance with.

Stop sending people to prison for what amounts to an all expenses paid abdication of their responsibility to being a productive member of society. Just waste them. I don't exhibit compassion to those who would never have shown it to me. In this situation it is meaningless to be 'the better person' and show them mercy. You really do encourage more of the same behavior from others down the road when you do.
