Growing up, whenever I said "hey!" to my sister she would always sing "hay is for horses, aren't you glad you're a jackass!?"

How could I answer that question?!?! Yes? No? Maybe?
It's unanswerable! A riddle of the sphinx for the ages!

...I can understand why some guys just send "hey" now.

Sending email is seen as doing "it to" women.
Like it's invading personal space, an intrusion, a violation.

It's not "why is it we only receive this word," or, "why is this one word so important to them," or,"what information am I supposed to take from this one word," but "why do they do it to us."

Note to self...one word, consisting of 3 letters, emails are violating and victimizing women. Start sending shorter emails to minimize emotional trauma. Maybe "oi," or, "hi" although that's similar to "hey," I think "yo" would be better. Perhaps forgo words and letters altogether and stick to numbers and punctuation.

...Although, the @ sign may cause dizziness if they follow it with their eyes. Crap. No solutions.

When I was younger if someone said Hey to you it was considered rude and the inner voice is "you know that turns in to horse manure" and would get someone ignored.

It's the most annoying message to receive. I always respond "hey you". And then never respond to further messages.
