Nelson Mandela's grandson to apply for bail while in court over alleged rape of a teenage girl

Grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, Ndaba Mandela walks out of the magistrates court where his brother Mbuso Mandela is scheduled to appear accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Friday, Aug. 21, 2015. The grandson of Nelson Mandela, Mbuso Mandela appeared in court accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, where a judge will decide whether he will be granted bail.

JOHANNESBURG — A grandson of Nelson Mandela accused of raping a 15-year-old girl will remain in police custody, while his defense lawyers collect more evidence for a bail hearing, a South African judge ruled on Friday.

Mbuso Mandela's bail hearing was postponed to Tuesday to give his defense team more time to locate a witness who they say could testify that the incident was consensual, a judge ruled.

The judge in the Johannesburg magistrate's court also ordered the prosecution to produce the official identity document of the teenager accusing Mbuso Mandela of rape, in order to settle the defense's dispute that the girl is 16, the age of legal consent in South Africa.

Members of the Mandela family were in the cramped courtroom where Mbuso Mandela, 24, appeared calm as he sat behind his lawyer. He has been in police custody since his arrest last Saturday.

The rape allegedly took place at a restaurant in Greenside, a Johannesburg suburb, on Aug. 7, police said.

This is so sad, & disgraceful. Not only for the victim, her family & her future... (some reports day she was 17 & taped in a restaurant), but for the entire Mandela family, community, South Africa & the world.

What the h@ll is wrong with people?
Don't they realize that everything they they do, or don't do effects at least 7 other people.
This tarnished all his grandfather's stuggle, years of suffering, all his work & his grandfather's family name. sad

By South America law his name can not be released as of yet... however, Mr Mandala has/ had, only 2 grandsons. One 40-41 (very educated & accomplished) & one 24.
The suspect is 24 & has been showned in these links on short videos. Also Goggle has photos of both men.

To me this wouldn't be news worthy except who he is related to.
IMO... It is disgusting to link someones name to someone elses action..

Let the person take the total responsibility for their actions. This story is just basically breaking so nothing is really known. IMO some lacky reporter that wants a scoop finds this out and because who the rapist might be it becomes big news...

I personally don't like the grandfather but he is in no way responsible for this. So his name should be kept out of it.

His name will get him off. The girl will be demonized and ridiculed as a liar seeking fame. Rape is very common in SA now.
Mandela will end up being the victim. Same old spin.

What?! An atrocity in Africa?! A violation of human rights?!
A crime among the utopian lands of the dark continent?
Rape in a country that has some of the highest reported incidences of rape, against men, women, children, and infants?!

What's next? A bunch of people killing animals?
Da horror!

I almost hope he is convicted, it seems that would mean he's a normal south african.

If it wasn't for the fact that he was Mandela's grandkid, it wouldn't even make the press.... not fair to Pops. IMO, It really has to play out more in order to get more hard info.

Even then.. and even if true... Pops, (like him or not) didn't do it...He should be left out of it.

Some people just can't recognize the merits of respecting and upholding a family name.
It is possible that a legacy is about to die...

The Mandela name lived on after Winnie was found to have ordered the murder, rape and torture of men women and children..

I just read that she threatened the accuser in this case.. Sent one of her bodyguards to pay them a visit and ask them if they wanted to join her to 'discuss' the matter at her home.. haha... Never to be seen or heard from again..

They declined... This girl won't make it to court to testify..

I dont know much about the wife, but she is not a Mandela by birthright. Its not the same as when male heirs of the family name disgrace the legacy their forefathers left.
I know that paternal lineage is not a big issue in some cultures, but it is still a consideration to many.
The fact that his grandson has already been accused, already tarnishes whatever his granddad stood for. "Taking care" of the problem doesnt help in the long run either.

When one is born "special",
one tends to be inclined to believe
they're exempt from the law.

This rates right up there with the kennedys.

I don't know how old you are, but she was the face of the crusade to get Mandela freed.

She was there arm and arm when he walked out of prison.

The world knows who she is and what she did.

No one knows who this grandson is.

Neither too young nor too old, and neither too worldly nor too provincial.tongue2

I will look into their history a bit deeper regarding what you said.

The thing is, i know throughout history, many political wives have been either the downfall or the support of their other half's career and/or infamy.

But politics aside, social disgrace and eventual obscurity of the family name is usually brought about by the bad choices of the heirs to the family name. The same is true for the opposite effect if the generations after gives due respect and honor to it.
