Topic: RIP Deputy Carl Howell, You WIll Be Missed | |
---|---|
Saturday morning I lost a friend, Deputy Carl Howell. He was a Deputy Sheriff here in Carson City killed in the line of duty protecting a woman and several small children. Not only was he blitzed by the subject and critically wounded, he was able to kill the shooter (after being critically wounded) and saving many peoples lives.
He was a good man, a good friend and a good cop who leaves behind a widow and four small children. Please pray for his family, friends and his family in blue. |

"" CARSON CITY — A sheriff's deputy was
shot and killed early Saturday while responding to a domestic battery report on the east side of Carson City. The suspected shooter also died. It was the first death of a Carson City police officer in the line of duty by an attacker since 1867. The officer, identified as Carl Howell of Stagecoach, leaves a wife and four children. The shooter's name's wasn't immediately released. Hundreds of local residents lit candles and stood quietly at an impromptu vigil for the slain officer at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the Capitol grounds. The family of the slain officer, including his children, sat in front of the memorial during the brief service that included numerous uniform officers from different agencies. The mood was somber in the hot evening. Tears were shed by some but otherwise it was quiet, except for when the bagpipe player performed. An officer speaking at the vigil said: "We will never get over the loss of Carl." Kevin Howell, the father of the slain officer, said his only comment was to quote his son, who told his father on his last birthday that if he could achieve even one-quarter of what his dad achieved in his lifetime of public service he would be lucky. "He soared way above that today," Howell said. Sheriff Ken Furlong, in a statement, said deputies responded to a report of a domestic battery involving physical injury in the 4100 block of Montez Drive in east Carson City at 2:18 a.m. "As officers arrived at the scene, they reported physical injury to the female," Furlong said. "Within minutes, the male suspect came out of the house and opened fire on the officers, killing one. Additional units arrived in the area and secured the residence, evacuating three children (ages 8-13) and one adult. The suspect was located dead at the scene." The Sheriff's Office is expected to release more details Sunday. It has turned the investigation over to the Reno Police Department. At the vigil, Furlong said he recalled the day in 2006 when Howell came into the department and said he wanted to help. The officer told Furlong: "I know it is a risk. It is a risk I take freely." There has not been a Carson City sheriff's officer killed in the line of duty since Sheriff Timothy Smith was shot in 1867. The agency reports four total law enforcement deaths in the line of duty, the last being Deputy Sheriff Daniel McDaniel in 1963 as a result of an auto accident, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page website. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell said in a statement that the flags at City Hall and other facilities have been set to half-staff in honor of the fallen officer. The city has also put into motion a crisis response team to help all those involved and provide financial help to the officer's family. "I just learned that the officer was the son of one my Vietnam Veteran Chapter 388 members," Crowell said. "The heart of our community goes out to the family of the slain officer who was killed in the line of duty earlier this morning," he said. "It is a reminder of the dangers that our first responders go through each and every day while keeping us safe." In a statement, Gov. Brian Sandoval said: "The Nevada family lost one of its finest public servants today. I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the untimely death of a Carson City Sheriff's Deputy, and pray for strength and peace for his family and fellow officers during this time of tragedy."" http://m.reviewjournal.com/news/crime-courts/hundreds-remember-slain-carson-city-sheriffs-deputy |

Thanks. He had no idea what he was walking in to.
They posted part of the rap sheet of the shooter and he had plenty of violent arrests in his background including Domestics and Weapons Charges. I really don't think Deputy Howell knew what he was walking into, but he did save a woman and three kids. If that's not a hero I don't know what is! |

That is what respect looks like. Those are just Officers and Fire Fighters and Medics coming from Vegas to Carson. That's not counting the ones from Reno to Carson or Gardnerville to Carson or Tahoe to Carson. |

Deputy Carl Howell, officially end of watch. When the dispatcher came over the radio calling off the end of watch there wasn't a dry eye in the house. It was a sight to be seen. The details of the incident finally were made completely public and this man was the definition of a hero. At 2:18AM on Saturday August 15 a very serious domestic call came in. All officers on duty (Carson is a small town so we only have 4 maybe 5 on Graveyard, the State Troopers and Parole and Probation usually back up on serious calls) were dispatched to the scene. Deputy Howell went to talk to the subject a Jonathan Pope who had a history of violence and weapons charges. Pope also knew the police were called since he battered his girlfriend and three kids so he laid in wait with a gun. It was a blitz attack, Deputy Howell was shot before he knew it, but the amazing thing to me was that the other deputies were just getting out of their cars and they didn't realize at first all hell was breaking loose because Deputy Howell who was mortally wounded did not use his radio to call for an officer down he used his gun to kill the subject as he started pointing it his girlfriend and other officers, which would have been another blitz attack. Only then when Pope was killed, Deputy Powell succumbed to his wounds. This man deserves to be called a hero. If it weren't for his actions many would have died that day including women, children and his brothers in blue. I knew Deputy Howell for many years, we went through Boy Scouts together, played pranks together he was there when I got my Eagle Scout and helped with my project. He was also there when I got my order of the arrow. It really sucks when life takes you in different directions and you don't see the people you used to be close with unless it is on a work related call. This actually hurts more then my divorce did, and I think EVERYONE on this website saw how bad I took that. This is so much worse. So much worse. |

It wont let me post the picture of the Honor Guard escorting Deputy Howell.
I remember my first day changing high schools, year I was shy and nervous but he was one of the first people to come up to me after seeing me sitting eating my lunch off in a corner and inviting me to play some football with them. That's just the kind of guy he was. Even the people he arrested had respect for him. |
