Cecil the Lion's Brother, Jericho, Shot and Killed, Says Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force

Cecil the Lion's brother, Jericho, was shot and killed today, the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said, in the wake of Zimbabwe calling for the extradition of the American dentist who admitted killing Cecil in early July.

"It is with huge disgust and sadness that we have just been informed that Jericho, Cecil's brother has been killed at 4pm today," the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said in a Facebook post. "We are absolutely heart broken."
The process has already begun in Zimbabwe to extradite Walter Palmer, the Minnesota dentist who admitted to killing Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe, a cabinet minister said, according to the Associated Press.

"Unfortunately it was too late to apprehend the foreign poacher as he had already absconded to his country of origin," said Zimbabwe's environment, water and climate minister Oppah Muchinguri, according to the AP.

Muchinguri said they want Palmer to be "made accountable."

"Almost 500,000 people are calling for his extradition and we need this support," Muchinguri said. "We want him tried in Zimbabwe because he violated our laws."

There is an extradition treaty between Zimbabwe and the United States.

Muchinguri said Palmer violated the country's Parks and Wildlife Act, which controls the use of bow and arrow hunting. She also said Palmer, who reportedly paid $50,000 to hunt the lion, also violated the act through financing an illegal hunt. ABC News has been unable to confirm that figure independently.

Palmer said in a statement earlier this week that he "deeply" regretted the pursuit of the early July hunt in Zimbabwe that "resulted in the taking of this lion." He added that he "had no idea" Cecil the lion was a "known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study."

"I hired several professional guides and they secured all proper permits," Palmer said in his statement. "To my knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted."

Meanwhile, in the U.S., a petition to extradite Palmer began July 28, and quickly surpassed 100,000 signatures -- meaning the White House will have to respond.

“Are you saying that all this noise is about a dead lion? Lions are killed all the time in this country,” said Tryphina Kaseke, a used-clothes hawker on the streets of Harare. “What is so special about this one?”

As with many countries in Africa, in Zimbabwe big wild animals such as lions, elephants or hippos are seen either as a potential meal, or a threat to people and property that needs to be controlled or killed.

While the Obama administration says it stands by Planned Parenthood and has no plans to act on shocking videos of doctors offering body parts of aborted babies for sale, they will move fast to get to the bottom of what happened to Cecil the Lion.

US Fish and Wildlife Director Dan Ashe tweeted out the news on Thursday:

USFWS is investigating the tragic killing of #CecilTheLion. Will go where facts lead. Efforts to contact Dr. Palmer so far unsuccessful.

In Zimbabwe, Reuters is reporting that the government has no comment on Cecil; local media are not interested in the story and locals are perplexed by the outrage.

This is because their sentiments and consciousness are not evolved and elevated unlike in more developed countries.

Has anyone actually knocked on his door?

Or,

Paid a social call to his office?

He'll be harder to find than Osama Bin Laden. Probably having plastic surgery right now.

Funny, now he's the hunted one.

His home, his office, his vacation home, taxidermist. Reporters clients, protesters.
Cecil, sad.
Jericho.... Ok, by who? It wasn't the dentist.
1 Have we heard from anyone in Zimbabwe other than the climate and water minister? I have an inkling that her area of expertise might not be lions, poachers, wildlife conservation aside from rivers and lakes.
2 Is there any one from the park or the lion study that confirms the cutesy factor of Cecil's 'brother' raising his cubs before he got killed? Are they actually brothers?
3 Where are the people from the Park and where are the guides that lead the dentist to poach Cecil?
Didn't they say that they caught him (them) because if Jericho is the brother and he's been poached too this lion story is begining to smell a Bit like salmon.
4 I love animals, domestic and wild (except snakes, rats...) I value their lives too I just don't like them.
The numbers I heard on the news today bothered me a bit, 400 something lions have been trophy hunted in 14 or so countries that ALLOW tourists to hunt. The guides made $50k for Cecil alone. Thats a lot of money for someone to spend on a hunting trip.
If he paid that much for the HUNT, how much was he going to pay to get his lion back here? If he even got it.
That's kinda making me wonder,
5 Is it possible that the guides told him 'the money goes to conservation and the park service..ww blah blah we don't have internet dis tag we turn in with contribution to make our land more beautiful. SCAM
SCAM SCAM. Green eggs and SCAM. The dentist might not be the best guy on the planet and his arrow or bolt hit bone instead of organs. But I HIGHLY doubt that this guy would pack a breakdown (bow) catch a red eye to Zimbabwe mud up roll around in some lioness scat and stalk Cecil or any animal ALONE. No guide no safety no knowing what and what not to do or WHERE AND HOW TO GET ONE LION AWAY FROM A PRIDE TO TAKE HIM WITHOUT BEING EATEN BY OTHER LIONS. No guide our dentist would have been Cecil's midafternoon snack. What about the 400+ other hunters and the millions of dollars spend on ttheir trophies?
Their guide(s)? Dentist Bad Rhino Smash.
Can we get a Park official, a hunting permit official?
Mammalians have mammary glands that separate us from other animals, male lions are, well, they're lions, they're mammals, the don't produce milk though, that's why the lioness does most of the hunting to PROVIDE FOR HER, HER CUBS. Males, competitors, eat cubs to bring the lioness back into heat and snuff out weaker offspring.
Before we hang this guy let let US fish and wildlife and our court's, make some kind of decision before we crate him up and ship him to Abu Dabi.
Poor cubs... How bout catching the actual poachers?

I believe, paradoxically, that we are indebted too the good doctor.

Over the span of history. we are told that "timing is everything."

and the issue of sport hunting is developing a greater number of adherents.

Look at the gay issue vis-a-vis mass conversioins in the direction of tolerance and decency.

Each event in history statrts witrh a spark.

Thanks a lot, Mr America's, Putin

The dentist was in the wrong place at the right time, I have no doubt about that. But if there was a spark it came from Teddy's matches. Teddy of course being Theodore Roosevelt. It became a trend for prominent Americans to go hunting on safari and bring back trophies. Of course this slowed as wildlife conservation groups began to form not wanting other species to go the way of the dodo.
But all that aside 2 MAJOR points need to be made

1. Jericho is not dead.
2. The dentist could not have hunted Cecil alone, nor would he know that this lion was different from any other lion in that area. He paid the wrong person, that person is responsible for the death of Cecil.

A local (poacher) guide is the only person who would know how and where to go to hunt and or kill a lion. We don't have any proof that the dentist intended on hiring a poacher or poaching a lion. There were 400+ lions killed for sport before the dentist did so. I have yet to hear of any of those hunters name, occupation place of business, pictures on the news of them their houses vacation houses...

Nothing gives me more NYC love than seeing the Empire State Building all lit up! Tonight, in the wake of what happened to Cecil the lion, a very special light show is being shown, and it features tons of endangered species! It's truly stunning. -Benson On 106.1 BLI
