The revenue was generated by cannabis sales of more than $260 million from June 2014 to June 2015, according to data released by the Washington State Liquor Control Board, which oversees the distribution of cannabis. Voters in Washington state, as well as in Colorado, approved measures legalizing personal possession and consumption of marijuana in 2012, ushering in the licensing and taxation of retail stores that offer a range of marijuana products to adults. Despite remaining against federal law, possession of small amounts of marijuana is also legal in the District of Columbia, Oregon, and Alaska. In Washington state, customers who are 21 and older are legally allowed up to one ounce (28 grams) of marijuana before buying more. They also can buy up to 16 ounces (454 grams) of pot-infused product in solid form, or up to 72 ounces (2 kg) of marijuana-infused product in liquid form. Retailers sold more than 23,000 pounds of marijuana of the 31,000 pounds produced in Washington during the year, state data showed. In April, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, signed a measure that overhauls the state's medical-marijuana market, reconciling the long unregulated system with the state's recreational pot industry. Washington state pulled down $65 million in first-year tax revenue from marijuana
That's great. How much did the state pay in enforcement and compliance and sundry? How much did the illegal pot or drug industry grow, requiring increases in other areas? Prisoners in Missouri paid more than a million dollars in sales tax, other states are revoking exemptions from inmates paying sales tax in their canteens...does that mean we should be arresting more people? There's millions to be made in taxes! Saying "Washington state pulled down $65 million," finding it relevant, and celebrating it seems to be what "sheep" would do. |

Prisoners in Missouri, Missouri being a State, correct? Assuming those are State and not federal prisoners, which would make your point absolutely irrelevant, and in State FUNDED (costing the State millions if not billions) facilities if not PRIVATE STOCK HOLDING OPERATOR CCA, in which case it would cost the State even more money that ends up funneled Through Wall Street into rich investors tax shelter silk lined pockets. I'm not sure here so don't hold me to this but I think that the cost of incarcerating inmates in the State of Missouri is a wee bit more than 'more than a million dollars'. Also, the last time I checked, $65 million is worth more than 'more than a million dollars'. |
