JUNE 17, 2015
CHARLESTON, S.C. — A white gunman opened fire Wednesday night at a historic black church in downtown Charleston, S.C., killling nine people before fleeing and setting off an overnight manhunt, the police said.

At a news conference with Charleston’s mayor early Thursday, the police chief, Greg Mullen, called the shooting a hate crime.

“It is unfathomable that somebody in today’s society would walk into a church while they are having a prayer meeting and take their lives,” he said.

The police said the gunman walked into the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church around 9 p.m. and began shooting.

Eight people died at the scene, Chief Mullen said. Two people were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, and one of them died on the way.

“Obviously, this is the worst night of my career,’’ Chief Mullen said. “This is clearly a tragedy in the city of Charleston.’’

City officials did not release information about the victims and did not say how many people were in the church during the shooting. Hospital officials declined to comment.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said the city was offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman, whom the police described as a clean-shaven white man about 21 years old who was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots. Chief Mullen described him as “extremely dangerous.”

”To walk into a church and shoot someone, is out of pure hatred,” the mayor said as he walked away after the news conference.

Law enforcement officers from the F.B.I.; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division; and other agencies were assisting. Chief Mullen said the police were tracking the suspect with police dogs.

Around 10:45 p.m., police officers escorted a man in handcuffs who appeared to match the suspect’s description. But officials said later that they were still searching for the gunman.

In the first hours after the shooting, police blocked reporters and passersby from approaching the church, opposite a Marriott Courtyard, because of a bomb threat. Many among the cluster of media were political reporters in town to cover campaign events of Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jeb Bush.

Helicopters with searchlights circled overhead, and a group of pastors knelt and prayed across the street.

“The question is, ‘Why God?’,” a man wearing a shirt bearing the name of the Empowerment Missionary Baptist Church said during the prayer.

Later, a group of church leaders gathered at the corner of Calhoun and King Streets, a few blocks from where the shooting occurred, and held an impromptu news conference. Tory Fields, a member of the Charleston County Ministers Conference, said he believed the suspect had targeted the victims because of their race.

”It’s obvious that it’s race,” he said. “What else could it be? You’ve got a white guy going into an African American church. That’s choice. He chose to go into that church and harm those people. That’s choice.”

The church is one of the nation’s oldest black churches. The pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, is a state senator. It was not clear if he was at the church at the time of the shooting.

The Gothic Revival church was built in 1891 and is considered a historically significant building, according to the National Park Service.

The congregation was formed by black members of Charleston’s Methodist Episcopal Church who broke away “over disputed burial ground,” according to the website of the National Park Service.

In 1822, one of the church’s co-founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to foment a slave rebellion in Charleston, the church’s website says. The plot was foiled by the authorities and 35 people were executed, including Mr. Vesey.

The church houses the oldest black congregation south of Baltimore, the Park Service said.

Gov. Nikki R. Haley said in a statement that she and her family were praying for the victims.

“While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we’ll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another,’’ the governor said. ”Please join us in lifting up the victims and their families with our love and prayers.”

Late Wednesday, the campaign staff of Mr. Bush, the former governor of Florida who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, said he was canceling appearances planned for Thursday in Charleston because of the shooting. Mrs. Clinton was in Charleston Wednesday, but an aide said she had left the city before the shooting.

Jason Horowitz and Nick Corasaniti reported from Charleston, and Ashley Southall from New York.

Animal... this guy is not human. Just a cold blooded killer. And it would appear that it is a hate crime. I am sure this coward will kill himself to further deny the families the satisfaction of seeing him sentenced to death.

Just a disgusting act.

It is somewhat of a numbers game. If one in a million is a nut filled with hate, when there is a hundred million, you have a hundred nuts. The numbers multiply with the percentage who get no education, join gangs, etc. The factors keep increasing to produce persons who cannot function in society. Violence has become the norm and our society is becoming numb to it.

Manhunt for South Carolina Church Shooting Suspect

By TOM LIDDY Jun 18, 2015, 6:24 AM, est..

WATCH: Special Report: Shooting at Historic South Carolina Church
Charleston Police Department
Police and federal law enforcement agencies were in the midst an all-out manhunt Thursday morning for the gunman they say is responsible for killing 9 people in a Charleston South Carolina church Wednesday night in what police described as a hate crime.

The suspect opened fire on a bible study group at the historic black Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun street, killing eight people in an "unfathomable" act of violence. One other person was rushed to the hospital and died. Police originally said two people were hospitalized.

In a chilling twist, police said the alleged gunman, whom the mayor called a "horrible scoundrel," was inside the church attending the prayer meeting with worshipers for almost an hour.

Police said that three of the victims were males and six were females. Their ages were not clear.
Three people survived the shooting, but details about them were not immediately available.

"This is a situation that is unacceptable in any society and especially in our society and our city," Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said.

The suspect was described as approximately 5-foot-9, wearing a sweatshirt with distinctive markings and Timberland boots, police said. Joining the search was the FBI and state law enforcement.

Police also said the car he was driving had a "very distinctive" license plate. Officials would not elaborate on the make and model of the car.

CHARLESTON SHOOTING

Charleston Shooting: South Carolina Has 19 Active Hate Groups, Including KKK Chapters

Hate crimes in South Carolina are coming under renewed scrutiny after a gunman, suspected to be a white male, shot and killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston late Wednesday. The list of active hate groups in the state, which does not have a hate crimes law, contains 19 associations, including two Ku Klux Klan chapters.

According to the Hate Crime Statistics Act a hate crime is one that is committed with “evidence of prejudice based on race, gender or gender identity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity." A hate crime can be “murder, non-negligent manslaughter; forcible rape; aggravated assault, simple assault, intimidation; arson; and destruction, damage or vandalism of property.” Federal authorities said they would investigate Wednesday's attack as a hate crime.

White nationalist, Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazi, black separatist, neo-confederate and anti-LGBT groups were among the 19 groups included on a list of South Carolina’s active hate groups. Nationally, the number of hate groups has declined in recent years. In 2014, the United States had 784 active hate groups, down from its 2011 peak of 1,018 groups, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In 2007, 127 hate crimes were reported in South Carolina, according to the FBI. The following year, the number rose to 153. But in 2013, the number dropped to 51, FBI numbers show. In July 2014, the KKK distributed leaflets to a South Carolina neighborhood that said “Save Our Land, Join the Klan,” NBC News reported.

Nearly half of the 5,922 hate crimes reported nationally in 2013 were racially based – far more than on any other type of prejudice. Sexual orientation was the next most common, accounting for 20.8 percent of reported hate crimes, FBI statistics show.

“What has our society come to when people in a prayer meeting in the sacred halls of a church can be shot in what is deemed a possible hate crime?” Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the National Action Network, said in a statement released Thursday.

The shooter, who remains at large, reportedly said, “You rape our women and are taking over our country and you have to go,” a survivor of the shooting told NBC reporter Eric King, who revealed the quote in a tweet ahead of the interview.

Charleston Shooting Suspect Dylann Roof, 21, Apprehended

Dylann Roof, the alleged gunman authorities say is responsible for killing nine people in a Charleston, South Carolina, church Wednesday night, has been apprehended, authorities said. 3 males - 6 females

"I can confirm that there is a subject in custody in relation to the shootings in Charleston from last evening," U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said today at a news conference. "And, of course, this moves us into a different phase of the investigation, which will be pursued as vigorously and with as complete cooperation as the apprehension of this individual."

Police said Roof, 21, was arrested today at a traffic stop in Shelby, North Carolina, about 250 miles north of Charleston.

A citizen saw the suspect's car and reported it to police, who responded and made the arrest, police said. Roof cooperated with the officer who stopped him, according to police.

Officials said they believe Roof acted alone.

"I am so pleased we were able to resolve this case quickly," Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said at a news conference.

This young man may have some serious mental history and whether or not it's 'HATE' related - who's to know for sure! When he tells the one remaining woman {that he thought was the only 1} "I'm leaving you alive so you can tell everyone what I did">>>{paraphrased}---seems he may just be craving ATTENTION and found his niche for obtaining that!

Cra-Cra-Crazy...walks among us daily; if we could identify those 'TRIGGERS' {whatever they maybe} wouldn't our lives be so much safer/peaceful?

This is just the first layer of this horrid event. shocked

Charleston shooter Dylann Storm Roof was reportedly taking a drug that has been linked with sudden outbursts of violence, fitting the pattern of innumerable other mass shooters who were on or had recently come off pharmaceutical drugs linked to aggression.

According to a CBS News report, earlier this year when cops searched Roof after he was acting suspiciously inside a Bath and Body Works store, they found “orange strips” that Roof told officers was suboxone, a narcotic that is used to treat opiate addiction.

Suboxone is a habit-forming drug that has been connected with sudden outbursts of aggression.
SS X2

A user on the MD Junction website relates how her husband “became violent, smashing things and threatening me,” after just a few days of coming off suboxone.

Another poster on the Drugs.com website tells the story of how his personality completely changed as a result of taking suboxone.

The individual relates how he became “nasty” and “violent” just weeks into taking the drug, adding that he would “snap” and be mean to people for no reason.

Another poster reveals how his son-in-law “completely changed on suboxone,” and that the drug sent him into “self-destruct mode.”

A user named ‘Jhalloway’ also tells the story of how her husband’s addiction to suboxone was “ruining our life.”

A poster on a separate forum writes about how he became “horribly aggressive” towards his partner after taking 8mg of suboxone.

A website devoted to horror stories about the drug called SubSux.com also features a post by a woman whose husband obtained a gun and began violently beating his 15-year-old son after taking suboxone.

According to a Courier-Journal report, suboxone “is increasingly being abused, sold on the streets and inappropriately prescribed” by doctors. For some users, it is even more addictive than the drugs it’s supposed to help them quit.

As we previously highlighted, virtually every major mass shooter was taking some form of SSRI or other pharmaceutical drug at the time of their attack, including Columbine killer Eric Harris, ‘Batman’ shooter James Holmes and Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza.

As the website SSRI Stories profusely documents, there are literally hundreds of examples of mass shootings, murders and other violent episodes that have been committed by individuals on psychiatric drugs over the past three decades.

Pharmaceutical giants who produce drugs like Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil spend around $2.4 billion dollars a year on direct-to-consumer television advertising every year. By running negative stories about prescription drugs, networks risk losing tens of millions of dollars in ad revenue, which is undoubtedly one of the primary reasons why the connection is habitually downplayed or ignored entirely.

who woulda thunk it, another mass murderer on some kind of prescription pills. but yea, lets keep blaming the guns.
