Has anyone ever had their car or pickup truck towed using chain, rope, or strap? If so, what is the furthest distance you had to go?

As long as the chain or strap can support the weight and it's 199% secure you can go as far as the other car or truck has fuel to tow it. Check if it's legal where you are first.

I have for about 40 miles maximum. Just remember the tow vehicle cannot brake for the one being towed, so you'll need someone in that car who knows the route. That's an important point because when towing that way, the vehicle in the rear uses their brakes to help stop the towing vehicle. That keeps the tow strap taught, keeping it from being run over by the towed vehicle. Straps are better than chains, in my opinion. Should some slack occur in the tow-like straps don't throw up pieces of asphalt and gravel. Best bet would be a tow-dolly from a rental company.

Points for safety, if poss, secure a large tire (no rim) to the back of unit pulling, serves as a cushion if they do bump. Pulled unit will not have good breaks, if it has power assist brake system. Last, but not least, if towed unit has automatic transmission, ck manual for towing distance allowed w/o removing driveshaft. Can ruin transmission if towed to far.

Earlier comments requimended renting a dolly, MUCH SAFER for distance.

GOOD LUCK

Craziest thing about towing u'll see over here in India

Real time example. Two man on a bike, person on the back seat holding hand of a person on another bike to to tow,,

Person on a bike puts a foot to oust a scooter to tow which is in front,,,

I have had both the experience for few miles

Humm actually it cost me two nights in a motel and a friend brought a trailer and brought me back home.. would not let me even pay for gas... due to he put it on his company card that he owns.. I did at least get to buy him lunch cause I grabbed the ticket before he did lol..

But had a tow guy that said he would do it for $450....surprised

I once used my front end loader, to drag some idiot's car outta my driveway.

.....

As to distances one can tow, with rope or chain? That is often regulated, by state laws and/or city ordinances.

I got towed in Brooklyn.. came out of a building and my car was gone. In reading the confusing signs it appears I parked illegally.

Worst part is you don't know if it was stolen or towed

It took me 3 hours to find the right City tow compound yard then $225.00 to get my car out of jail.
