How boring it would be if we all think the same? It never hurts to look at things from a different angle.

I agree.

At least listen to and consider another's opinion before you try to humiliate, ridicule, or beat it out of them.

EXACTLY...if you can't abide the topic/thread/discussion or the member that posted it --- troll on by and ignore the subject matter! Good Grief, the melting pot of every unique human here makes it interesting --- not some molded 'THINK LIKE ME - BE LIKE ME' popularity club! flowerforyou

You meant to say stroll on by, right? ...

It goes like this..."When I want your opinion, I'll ask for it"...And when they do, I just might give it in spite of the fact that what they really want me to do is to validate their parking ticket......hehe...When I give my opinion, I do it because they asked, not because I'm trying to fix them...

winking Well, I can't 'LIE'...
And your last sentence speaks LOUDLY; there are a lot of people that ask for opinions but whether or not what we provide or tell them meets their immediate needs or criteria is entirely up to them - we don't walk in their shoes!
So I post what might have worked for me and hope that they read it and can salvage some good from my years of knowledge from the road of 'HARD KNOCKS'. surprised

Yep, yep. Any expressions of my opinions are NOT made to change your opinions, mind, or way of thinking. EVEN IF I express disagreement with your opinion it is not to change your opinion, mind, or way of thinking.

So opinions are like noses, everybody has one of their own that they cannot stick another with (unless it is one of them pointy, needle-like noses).

I know we'd all like to think we have the power to change lives with our ideas and opinions but all we really have is the power to make others mad.

I like to think I would defend to the death some ones right to think whatever they want; which and opinion is. Of course that right ends right where mine or the weaker person stands. Lord help me to leave the Bullies to their own demise.

However I like, scratch that LOVE, a good debater that can support and opinion with reason or facts. I wish there were more summary of links than links (if I question the veracity I will read the link/check the source. If at the end of a discussion I go away "educated" I am thrilled but more of my schooling has been OJT than classroom.

Wish I was better with just ignoring or supporting people who are seeking and endorsement depending on their premises. I don't mind that I just wish it was clearer.

Thanks for the input in the thread.

Do you think people really want opinions most the time they ask for them?

Not as an absolute.
Like if you only gave them an opinion and walked away they would be content with that.
There's always more to all communication that isn't an attempt to determine immediate choices (e.g. how many apples are in that bushel, how many enemies are there, did you kill the buffalo or just wound it?)

If not what?

Anything coming out of someones mouth (or fingers via typing) that isn't asking for specific actionable factual information is an attempt at getting something other than what is being asked for.

If you want an easy answer outside of actionable information people open their mouths (or type like on forums) for 1 of 2 simple reasons.
1. To manipulate the behavior or perception of others for their individual wants/needs.
2. To establish a pecking order and/or group identity in a social hierarchy.

Verbal (typed) communication is just a tool (opinions, humor, screams, text speak, whatever).
All tools can be used for multiple functions and always are.
Human beings are limited in what they want though.
They just try to go about fulfilling it in infinite ways though in order to appear special and valued.

Sure. Take cynicism, for instance. Or maybe, pedanticism? pedantry? I don't know.

At the end of the day, folks ask questions to get an answer. It's the answerers that determine the outcome.
