A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business.

Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you.

"The young executives were Shocked, but the boss continued. "I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special SEED.

I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you.

I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO."

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.

Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however... He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection.
Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot.

But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.

He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes.
Jim put his empty pot on the floor and
many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," said the CEO. "Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!"

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot.. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front.

Jim was terrified. He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!"

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive Officer! His name is Jim!"

Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed.

"How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers.. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you.

Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!"

And then the old CEO noticed one guy napping in the corner and saw that his pot was empty too so named him co-ceo.
When in reality the guy was so lazy he just didn't deal with planting the seed, an obvious example of the peter principle.

Or

And then the company went out of business because while Jim was CEO he just took things as they were, couldn't think outside of the box, relied on his wife to tell him what to do with the company, and all the other guys that were pissed due to the old CEO's pointless mind games that sucked up company time and production and had absolutely nothing to do with the business itself started their own companies and due to sheer competition drove the old business into bankruptcy.

* If you plant honesty, you will reap trust

If you behave consistently, you may "reap" trust.
You can be a constant liar, and people will learn to trust that you lie.
Honesty is no guarantee of trust.
You can have trust without honesty.

* If you plant goodness, you will reap friends

"Goodness" is rather a subjective term.
One mans trash is another's treasure. One persons goodness is another persons harm.
So in essence this could mean "behave how people want you to and believe you should and they will like you."

* If you plant humility, you will reap greatness

Only if you believe in god and don't mind waiting until you die.
Otherwise if you don't ask for what you want, if you don't communicate your importance to, say, a company, showing how you are producing, they aren't going to chase you down and force credit upon you or give you anything. In many jobs if you don't ask for a raise, or take credit for your work, if you don't toot your horn to some degree, you will sit going nowhere.

And what you are potentially proposing here is "plant the idea of a false humility so people get that impression of you, that way when you manipulate things towards your abilities you seem greater than you are."

* If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment

If you are consistent, delaying gratification, you will be happy and satisfied?
Are people all that satisfied living in a cubicle day in and out, everyday, same routine, over and over and over and over for a modest increase in their wages mostly due to inflation?
Perseverance doesn't guarantee success.

Perseverance is no guarantee of contentment.
I'd say contentment is based more on personal choice and attitude than anything.

* If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective

Only if the consideration you are "planting" is about perspective.

* If you plant hard work, you will reap success

Tell that to Sisyphus and those that seem to follow his example.
Hard work is not a guarantee of success. You can dig a hole in your back yard for the next 20 years, working 15 hour days, and still not strike gold.

* If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation

Possibly. But only if the other person is amicable towards it and recognizes they need forgiveness.
Forgiving someone does not guarantee fixing all burned bridges.

* If you plant faith in God , you will reap a harvest

Which god? I have family that lives on a farm in the midwest.
They are surrounded by dunkards, german baptist, protestants, amish, weird californians, and lots more of different denominations.
If you say all gods are the same god then it seems faith in god is rather arbitrary and it's enough to pay lip service.
I truly and absolutely have faith in the sun god that it will bring warmth and light everyday of my life. Do I get to pick which harvest I want from the basket of prizes?

be careful what you plant now;
it will determine what you

Yeah, yeah, great, every decision comes with consequences.
With great power comes great responsibility.

Thanks

Plot twist: The people just got lucky with their seeds and soil and somehow it still growed. XD Plus it's a fecking plant, why be so bashful about it? Just say "The seed you gave me didn't work" instead of hiding D:

The "lessons" are nice enough, but having directly experienced the REAL corporate world, I support the critiques.

I went through a large number of that kind of "test" scenarios in the companies I worked for. No one did the seed and pot routine, but there were vaguely similar ones.

And at NO time was the goal of the test, to see who blindly followed instructions, in order to promote them positively.

I'm not trying to say "the world is a cutthroat place, and nice platitudes will make you a loser." That notion is just as ignorance based as the idea that "being nice all the time will bring just rewards."

The lesson which is most commonly missing, and which is missing from this little morality tale as well, is that being actively MINDFUL is what is needed.

For example, we had some games like this at IBM, in which we were presented with small tasks to perform, with incomplete or over-simplified instructions. The people who were praised at the end of the exercise, were those who actively investigated and asked questions and communicated in an ongoing way, to make sure that they remained on the same page as the "customer." If it had been this seed growing scenario, the "Jim" character would have been among the many who failed the exercise, because he made zero effort to understand what he was supposed to be trying to accomplish.

There are many tales like this in Religions as well, and many of THOSE tales are completely misunderstood by many followers. Especially common, are stories where someone appears to have been rewarded for showing blind obedience. However, in most cases, any one who reads the stories with enough experience and insight, realizes that the real rewards resulted from a MINDFUL application of faith. Not from slavish obedience.
