Just a bit of a silly question, but I'm curious..
In American movies & series ppl always just hang up the phone without saying goodbye. This would be considered weird and rude over here. I'm wondering, do you guys really do this? And for non-Americans, what is customary in your country to do when you want to end a phone conversation and hang up? Over here it is normal to say goodbye before you hang up the phone and also wait for the other person to say goodbye as well. If I accidentally disconnect too soon, I will phone them back to apologize. |

The only time I hang up (unless the connection drops) is if I want to be rude. Otherwise I say good bye
I don't think the movies are a true reflection |

in the movies they clip all kinds of stuff for time.
always use some kind of exit phrase even when telling tellemarketers off |
|
|
|
I always wrap a call with thank you been nice chatting...goodbye
Even when I am angry I think the rudest I have been is I am going to hang up now before I say things we might both regret. and I hang up |

I've done that kind of work for government office, inbound, receiving calls from ppl with questions about their benefits.. Haven't done it for long, shite job! But because I know it's a shite job, I now am far more friendly whenever I get called or have to phone a call centre / help desk. |

I guess its the editing then like eric says. No, it's not like it's cut out, it often happens in the middle of a scene, no editing. They just click off or simply shut their phones without saying goodbye. Oh well... if you don't do it in RL ... I was just curious :) |

it's still about time in the movies if it's not clipped. it's not there in the first place to leave time elswhere.
as for telemarketers no i was not implying i was polite. especially when they won't take no for an answer or they kepp calling back over and over again |

in Spanish we say go with God or God be with you.
in English, good bye if it's just a phone conversation. if im meeting with someone somewhere, ok see you in a few. even when my sister is being stupid I tell her you know, maybe now isn't a good time to talk. I'll call you later and say bye I have noticed that at work, people don't say good bye. im the receptionist and ask th clients what they need. then call their case worker to relay the message. most of the case workers say ok send them in and just hang up |

In American movies & series ppl always just hang up the phone without saying goodbye...do you guys really do this?
Not if we don't want to start an annoying text conversation that goes something like "why'd you just hang up? what's wrong? What did I do? Why are you mad at me? You're an a-hole!" "In American movies & series" the practical and realistic is forsaken for the dramatic and whatever saves time. You ever notice they show people masturbating more often on tv shows and movies? Yet they never show them washing their hands or throwing away any tissues. Of course they also show characters that eat constantly throughout a movie, but never take a dump, yet their pants always fit and they are never complaining about constipation. it's not like it's cut out, it often happens in the middle of a scene, no editing. They just click off or simply shut their phones without saying goodbye.
The social protocols of call ending can take away a lot from the scene and what the writers want the audience to respond to and feel, and who they want the audience to focus on. |

Most of us don't worry about those moments in film, but good to see you're on top of things. |

Have also seen many times where a character will answer a phone, but not say "Hello", and they'll just stand there not saying anything as the person on the other end talks. |

I remember that even as I teen I noticed it, thinking it was odd. I know what you are talking about.. I have seen it in the movies too. They do it for effect or drama. ( i.e. hurried, excited, shocked, in trouble, ect) I never just hang up on someone (unless it was a argument.. and then the hang up.. becomes a statement.. that you are trying to get across to the person) otherwise, It would be considered very rude. |

Yeah, guess it's that then ... It's certainly nothing to do with imports.. they wouldn't make different version of a phone call scene only to end a phone call it in a way that is perceived as odd in another country. That doesn't make any sense. Plus .. I don't watch imports... |

What do you say to the calls that tell you that you have 3 days to live?
But seriously...I have never noticed this in movies/shows. |
|
|
|
i do this all of the time, not in order to hang up rudely from the person i've been talking to, but if the conversation is over it's over...
