The Democrats who enable Bush
By HELEN THOMAS
HEARST NEWSPAPERS

WASHINGTON -- President Bush has no better friends than the spineless Democratic congressional leadership and the party's leading presidential candidates when it comes to his failing Iraq policy.

Those Democrats seem to have forgotten that the American people want U.S. troops out of Iraq, especially since Bush still cannot give a credible reason for attacking Iraq after nearly five years of war.

Last week at a debate in Hanover, N.H., the leading Democratic presidential candidates sang from the same songbook: Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York, and Barack Obama of Illinois and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards refused to promise to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq by 2013, at the end of the first term of their hypothetical presidencies. Can you believe it?

When the question was put to Clinton, she reverted to her usual cautious equivocation, saying: "It is very difficult to know what we're going to be inheriting."

Obama dodged, too: "I think it would be irresponsible" to say what he would do as president.

Edwards, on whom hopes were riding to show some independence, replied to the question: "I cannot make that commitment."

They have left the voters little choice with those answers.

Some supporters were outraged at the obfuscation by the Democratic front-runners.

On the other hand, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., are more definitive in their calls for quick troop withdrawals.

But Biden wants to break up Iraq into three provinces along religious and ethnic lines. In other words, Balkanize Iraq.

To have major Democratic backing to stay the course in Iraq added up to good news for Bush.

Now comes a surprising Clinton fan.

President Bush told Bill Sammon -- Washington Examiner correspondent and author of a new book titled "The Evangelical President" -- that Clinton will beat Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination because she is a "formidable candidate" and better known.

Sammon says Bush revealed that he has been sending messages to Clinton to urge her to "maintain some political wiggle room in your campaign rhetoric about Iraq."

The author said Bush contends that whoever inherits the White House will be faced with a potential vacuum in Iraq and "will begin to understand the need to continue to support the young democracy."

Bush ought to know about campaign rhetoric. Remember how he ridiculed "nation building" in the 2000 presidential campaign? Now he claims he is trying to spread democracy throughout the Middle East.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is another Democratic leader who has empowered Bush's war.

Pelosi removed a provision from the most recent war-funding bill that would have required Bush to seek the permission of Congress before launching any attack on Iran. Her spokesman gave the lame excuse that she didn't like the wording of the provision. More likely, she bowed to political pressure.

Is it any wonder the Democrats are faring lower than the president in a Washington Post ABC approval poll? Bush came in at 33 percent and Congress at 29 percent.

Members of Congress seem to have forgotten their constitutional prerogative to declare war; World War II was the last time Congress formally declared war.

Presidents have found other ways to make end runs around the law, mainly by obtaining congressional authorization "to do whatever is necessary" in a crisis involving use of the military. That's the way we got into the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

So what are the leading Democratic White House hopefuls offering? It seems nothing but more war. So where do the voters go who are sick of the Iraqi debacle?

________
So what is the underlying message of this?....Maybe that there is no difference between the 2 parties....if you think that a vote for a democrat will get us out of the Iraq mess you are being played...big time...
Ron Paul makes no bones about it...he would get out immediately....Out of Iraq as well as all the other places we have troops...

I find the admission from Bush that he has been sending messages to Clinton a bit alarming...but not surprizing since the Bush's & Clintons have been arm in arm for years now..
huh huh

Barbie...seems a bit hippocritical to call this a Holy War...
can you point out a bible reference that says we should
bomb babies while they sleep ..in the name of god...
or that we nuke another country...in the name of god...

maybe your god is the image of a large owl?...I doubt that
a real christian that values life would lend support to the
slaughter of the innocent...

as far as slapping a democrat...At one time I was a democratic
officer in Minn....until I realized that there is no difference between
the parties....I could just as well be saying the same about the GOP..
no difference to me...I'm independent....

Nerve gas in my hometown?...ridiculous fear mongering that doesnt
work on this former marine...sorry...

bring the troops home now...

I agree, Davinci, there isn't much difference between Democrats and Republicans, except Republicans(the ones I know personally) do seem to have thinner skin for criticism, tho I think the gap is closing.

The Democrats took over the House and Senate in 2006 promising change. I see change is disguised as status quo. The agendas aren't really any different than they were before 2006. Much talk . Little if any action. Anyone who thinks an elected official works for his/her constituients is deluding themselves.
Would "voting all the bums out" in 2008 help? I hate to sound negative, but I think doing that would only replace them with a new set of "bums" that follow their own self-serving interests.

Davinci the front runners don't want to alienate the independant voters so they'll try their best to not give a clear answer to how to handle Bush's mistaken war. That is fact is there are many Americans with much disatifaction with how the war was managed by Bush corp. But those same American are still looking for for the next President to savage some sort of reprive for the efforts of our fight men, and lives lost on both by US military and Iraqi allies fighting for change. What I'm saying is the next President will be the one to deliver the promise of hope. The thing is that person has to be elected first and they need all the votes they can get.

Well...the way to end the "staus quo" is to elect someone like
Ron Paul..who would significantly change things...if he lives thru
the process...

Ron Paul would be the downfall of America.

He wants to eliminate the department of education, health, and make abortion illegal. He also believes that every American should be allowed to own automatic weapons!

This all sounds very strange coming from a Doctor and makes me wonder if he doesnt have some darker force working him as a front man than the neo-cons who have Bush!!

You never hear Ron Paul talk about these issues, all you ever hear is what he hasnt done, and his endless dribble on the Fed Reserve.

Take Note, he is a doctor, noy a banker. Who is behind this mans campaigne??

Thank God, he doesnt stand a chance of winning!!drinker drinker

the more I read your posts the more it is apparent that you
do not have the capacity to think for yourself Fanta...clearly
you cannot differentiate between propaganda & truth...

provide a link where Paul has said he wants all americans to
own automatic weapons?....or are you using words that intentionally
inflame his position?...

Because he is a doctor he doesnt have the right to comment on
issues like the federal reserve?...how ridiculous is that? ...get back
in line and continue to help the rest of the sheeple pull that wagon
of BS over the hill....as for me, I'll continue to think for myself...

Brian, It seems there has developed a tradition of talking politics here, and disagreement is part and parcel of politics. Sometimes the people have extremely divergent views and they become quite heated about some of the exchanges. Admittedly I am one of these from time to time. But even though it is a dating site some of us choose to engage in this type of discussion. Hopefully we all manage our emotions well enough to continue discourse in a reasonable manner. If the frying pan is too hot, get off the fire. In the mean time, why should it bother you if the rest of us want to argue our positions?

As for Democrats enabling Bush and the right wing, I see it a little differently. There is a ring of truth in the policies of both the democrats and the Republicans. People cross over in their votes because of this reason. If they never did so it would be sad for your country and suggest that there is no real governance, only demagoguery.

Some who dislike Bush or Clinton (or whoever) are particularly disheartened to see their opponents pet policies win bipartisan support, but as long as there is room for opinion these things will happen.

I have posted several views from different candidates and have research the stance of many others, even Ron Paul.

I have posted many of these right here on this web-site. I am fair and put a lot of thought into where my vote will go.

Unlike others I do not limit the entire future of this country on one candidate or visit one sided-conspiracy web-sites for my information!

This post is not directed at anyone in particular, but if the shoe fits, wear it!

I post this as a defense to my name and reputation being defamed in this forum by a couple of other posters!

Please keep it fair. if you disagree with my views then disagree, but do not throw out BS using my name as in a direct response to me! Thank you, I have always played by the rules, and would not expect less from you!
