FBI Director: If Apple and Google Won't Decrypt Phones, We'll Force Them To

Everyone is stoked that the latest versions of iOS and Android will (finally) encrypt all the information on your smartphone by default. Except, of course, the FBI: Today, its director spent an hour attacking the companies and the very idea of encryption, even suggesting that Congress should pass a law banning the practice of default encryption.

It's of course no secret that James Comey and the FBI hate the prospect of "going dark," the idea that law enforcement simply doesn't have the technical capability to track criminals (and the average person) because of all those goddamn apps, encryption, wifi network switching, and different carriers.

How about privacy? Constitutional rights? Freedom? Liberty?

How about protection from the savages who threaten us on a daily basis.

NSA Snooping Matters, Even If You Have 'Nothing to Hide'

That's one problem with bulk collection of data. The information often sticks around indefinitely, while the rules only stick around until someone decides to change them. The IRS is all fired up to use big data to hunt for tax cheats, and in principle, the NSA can disseminate evidence of some crime. Sooner or later, other agencies may start to wonder why such a juicy data set is going to waste.

OMG ! It is not just about your ( boring ) life alone. There are more things at stake here. It also includes spying on people that have
more impact in society then just you. Corporations get spied on, Politicians get spied on. I would say that is a big unfair advantage if you want to be a world player.
If they will spy on terrorists then it would be "ok " Provided that those terrorists where scrutinized before as "terrorists" But who controls this spying aparatus? Off course they would not tell us who they are tracking. So how would you know that it is not being used for the wrong purposes. There is corruption everywhere.

I just mean that governments have to spy on certain things. I don't believe for one minute that they should spy on just anyone, but if they think someone has links to terrorism then who cares if they get spied on, I certainly don't.

Although in thought, I would agree with you here, but they are NOT using it for terrorism. They are using it from everything to consumerism to framing and blacklisting people and harassment. Then you could get into the control factor, that the sheeple play nice when they are constantly under threat of "supervision".

Yes I'm well aware of GCHQ. However, I'm not sure where they would find the time to spy on anyone except suspected terrorists. They can hardly keep up with them as it is.

They have thousands upon thousands of subcontractors to shuffle through the data. They "SAVE EVERYTHING". That is NO LIE. EVERYTHING.

What they can't get they put special bugs on, personally installed in LANS or stolen by people with thumb drives. You name it. They are tapped into all underwater fiber optics for all countries.

Not even going to get into the priority hardware and built into the software for all computer manufacturers.

Yes but what I don't get is why would anyone want to spy on me for instance. I do nothing except study and come on mingle for a few hours. What could they possibly gain from that

My friend, you would be surprised what can be built from a few bits of metadata should they ever feel the need

They control healthcare, economy, taxes, everything requires a license or to be registered, they know your shopping habits, where you bank, how many kids, what you eat, where you work, how you get there, when, your salary, where you go online, how often, who you talk to, your marital status, where you live......

It would be much easier to say what they don't know about us (and I can't think of anything in that category) but everything they do is shielded by national security..... so should they ever want to make a case against you......... who do you think would win, and who could stop them, even if it all was a lie?
