I have some favorites on my account, so I know this used to be possible, but I can no longer find a way to add someone from search results to my favorites. Am I just missing it, somewhere?

You need to go to their profile under their picture to the right you will see Add to Favorites click that and it will add them and send them a notification that you have added them to your favorites.
