I'm thinking that you can't go wrong with a nice box of chocolates. It's also ethical to buy the expensive luxury ones because they're made with cocoa butter and not palm oil, like all of the cheap chocolate is and farming that is destroying the environment of the orangutans.

chocolate is good unless you get one of those rare few people who doesn't like chocolate.
if you know she likes chocolate, your idea is great.
if you know about her some little thing that shows you know her interests is nice too.

any mundane gift is fine (flowers, candy, her favorite perfume) but, if you attach a hand-made, hand-decorated card & envelope to the gift, with a personal note inside..... she will remember that gesture, long after the flowers wilt, the chocolates disappear and the scent is gone...

To me chocolates, wine etc. are things you buy when you really don't know what to get someone or can't be bothered to go looking for something.

Well, I did actually say that I might give her a book and I've talked with her about books and although I'm not sure that she's much of a reader she's told me a bit about her interests. She's also told me a bit about her taste in music and I happen to know a guy that owns a record shop and specialises in rare collectable stuff.

I guess that it wouldn't be going overboard to give her a book or CD and a little box of chocolates.

It's also ethical, to buy her a vacuum cleaner, because it helps clean

Now I'm biased, I LOVE books, lol. Whenever I went shopping with me kids and a bookstore came in sight, they'd start to panic, hold me (one on either side), lol, and - try to - stop me from entering the bookstore. They knew if I'd go in, they'd have to wait and wait and wait, and neither of them being into books, well ... need I say more. I think they'll forever remember Waterstones in Hull. As do I, but with different feelings no doubt
