One of the greatest movies of all times! The movie that made many careers! I watched a 25th anniversary documentary on it and it was actually really interesting. It was John Hughes first time behind a camera and the studio wasn't going to let him direct and he had to put up his salary as insurance, Molly Ringwald(Claire) was originally casted as Allison (Ally Sheedys character) but threw a fit because she wanted to be Claire and she got that part, Emilio Esteves was originally cast as Bender but Hughes realized he looked to much like a jock. Nicholas Cage, John Cusack and Judd Nelson were all in the final running for Bender and the role was offered to Cusack who accepted, but after filming started Hughes fired him because he didn't look threatening enough for the role and hired Nelson. Rick Moranis was hired to play the janitor but walked due to creative differences.

Judd Nelson, being a method actor remained in character while on and off set, even when not filming. Hughes and his lack of experience as a director didn't know how to deal with that because Nelson kept harassing Molly Ringwald off camera playing the Bender role and Hughes tried to fire Nelson. Gleason, Estevez, Hall and Sheedy all threatened to quit the film if Nelson was fired so he stayed on because they would have had to reshoot a lot of the movie.

Imagine how this would have came out if they didn't make all those different character changes. It would have tanked. It is perfect the way it is. An epic classic!

Good to know! I still haven't seen it.

Imagine if they were to do a "remake" but cast different ethics to play the role. Now that would be something to watch.

Cheers!

Sixteen Candles was John Hughes' first job as a director, he filmed it in 1983, The Breakfast Club wasn't filmed until 1984.
