IRVINE – A man who was struck and killed while riding his bike in Irvine on Saturday was a respected cyclist who never owned a car, despite living in Southern California for more than 40 years.

Sandy Julienne, 47, of Huntington Beach, was riding his bike on the northbound side of Culver Drive north of University Drive when he was hit by an 18-wheeler just after 10 a.m. He was riding home after completing the weekly "Food Park" ride, in which about 100 cyclists complete a 30-mile training ride in two hours.

Julienne donned a yellow jersey that day, usually reserved for the best of the best, said fellow rider Roger Worthington. But he lived up to the flashy wardrobe, leading the pack with powerful legs honed through years of rigorous cycling.

"His throttle was down and his spirits were up, flying through space and time," said David Worthington, who was also part of the peloton that day.

Witnesses say Julienne was riding in the bicycle lane when the big rig's rear tire clipped the bike's handlebars. Fellow cyclists chased the 18-wheeler and detained the driver, who seemed unaware that he had hit Julienne, said David Worthington. The driver was questioned by Irvine police and released; an investigation is ongoing, said Lt. Rick Handfield.

Born in Holland to Indonesian war refugees, Julienne and his family immigrated to Garden Grove in 1960. He shunned material things and never owned much, said brother Glen Julienne. He did odd jobs and was a prototypical beach bum, preferring long bike rides to being cooped up behind a desk.

Julienne found his calling as a massage therapist. He attended Pacific College and worked at Laguna Spine and Sport, riding his bike from Huntington Beach to Laguna Woods every day. Patients relished his strong hands and sunny demeanor, while colleagues were inspired by his zen-like approach to life.

"Happy Monday!" was his trademark, along with an ever-changing array of colorful socks.

"He looked like a 30-year-old man, he has muscles like you wouldn't believe," said co-worker Sandra Forsyth, who also attended college with him. "He was young, full of life, and beautiful. He just made you want to be at work, and we loved him so much."

My thoughts:

Hi everyone, I'm very happy so many people noticed and appreciated my uncle he was my buddy more than anything and also my favorite person. The memories are plenty and will keep me going but, our loss is great. You can't be expected to get along with everyone but we sure do try, a comman bond we shared."We love people" He was a lot of fun to be around as a kid, he was always the same when he showed up, always ready to joke around and play. He could be hiding behind a door, and you knew he was there but he would still scare the heck out of you, bust out with a laugh followed by a hug. One thing he like to say was "April fools day after". Classic!

He was as strong as he looked, you'd know that if you shook his hand "Ouch". He was also as gentle his voice. Unique in that, he had no restrictions... He did what he wanted when he wanted. He had a job not to long ago, he was with the company for at least a year (good pay) His boss told him that he would have to take out his earring. He said "Ok thank's and without a clinch, quit and a found another job, where he was very happy. My Uncle Sandy liked; Riding anywhere, reading, family, coffee, beer (pref. Guinness), darts, cute toes, sundresses in spring, and cute blonds with "furry thighs" hey those are his words. He was cool real cool!

I'm glad he was in love when he passed. For a few years we would go out every weekend looking for "love" but mostly fun we always ended up with a great story. One spot we use to hang out at is a bar in H.B "PERQS", I went years later with a friend, and met my last girlfriend Annie b who I fell in love with soon after...When I told Uncle Sandy about her he ask does she have friends, I said "I don't know" But, she did and she was blond and cute, Susan b was the best thing that happened to him. They had very happy times, he loved her a lot. We shared a lot of stories and I know how really happy he was. Thank you! To everyone for your thoughts and prayers our family is so thankful. Truckers and drivers should learn from this. Truckers are the worst but not the least.

I have been riding my bike everyday for almost a year. I have been ran in the ditch several times, and have had drivers come within inches of my elbows and handle bars more times than I care to think about.

I started riding as recovery from lung surgury, but I fear death by vehicle more now than I do from lung complications! Waiting to pass for a few seconds is not asking too much compared with killing a cyclist!

Remember Sandy the next time your late for work and pass a cyclist on the road! We have no protection against a vehicle!!

and make sure that trucking company has plenty of occassions to be reminded of their responsibility in being accountable for their drivers!!!!!!!!


i am also a cyclist have not owned a car in 13 years, only bicycle to and fro....and it's not even a 10speed!! no speed no gears and no hand brakes...just heavy metal

a typical amsterdam bike...but here a bike has the same priority as a pedestrian....the car is always wrong...but who cares if you die as a result!!!???
