I believe the government no longer works because the people don't believe that it is no longer theirs. Our Republic (this is not a democracy) has become a nation of people that want others to fix their problems. Our U.S. senator had a "telephone town hall" just the other day, and to a man, everyone I asked about it said they just hung up. Some citing that "they don't listen to phone calls."

He called me, and I wasn't about to let an opportunity to voice my opinion go without saying something. For the record, I asked why our government isn't focusing on a plan to get this country off it's oil dependance. He went on about bio-fuels (sound bite for us Kansas farmers), but the truth is they pollute more, and cost more in energy to produce than you receive from them. So until we get officials that don't just tell us what we want to hear, we are truly hosed.

You want to know how you can tell if a politician is telling you the truth? You don't like what you hear.

I know I'm swimming against the tide here, but I have to respectfully disagree!

I work in government and am deeply engaged in non-profit/volunteer work. This exposes me to all levels of people in our society, both good and bad. I have to honestly say that most people are good, decent folks. They work hard, they love their families, and some are even trying to make a difference. There are plenty of "idiots" and self-serving people out there(and not all are elected officials), but I truly believe that our society as a whole is good.

Being a part of something bigger than myself helps, I suppose, but when you consider the fact that 87% of all you are exposed to on a daily basis, be it media or other influences, is NEGATIVE it's no wonder people feel get discouraged and only see the bad. When you spend some time at a family services center or in a youth mentoring program, and you see the love and witness the sacrifices people make for each other, it helps you hold on to the belief that people are still good and worthwhile!

And as for elected officials who don't just tell you what you want to hear....they DO exist! I work for several who say it like it is, which makes my job harder sometimes, but I always respect them for it. It's a large part of why I do work for them. Unfortunately they are rare, but it's up to us to just vote the others OUT!!

In my opinion, it all begins with US!!

(okay...your turn. Be gentle with me! flowerforyou )
