I think there is flour, salt, water, and I've heard dish soap in the mix too.

Is this right?

Anyone know how much I need of what?

Playdough

2 cups flour
4 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
1 cup of salt
food colouring
2 cups of water

Mix the above ingredients in a saucepan and stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes until the mixture congeals.

Cool and store in airtight container, in the fridge.

The salt acts as a preservative.

Thanks a lot you two!

I think I will make mine minus the food coloring....I want to keep my carpet & floors whitelaugh

Do you know if you make it with the coloring ...does it stain their hands or play surface?

Here are some recipes that I got from a sculptor friend of mine:

------------------------
Modeling "Clay" Recipe 1
------------------------
2-3 parts Flour
2 parts Salt
2 parts Water
Mix and cook over low heat until mixture thickens. Salt crystallizes
as it dries, making a very sparkly finished product. Shrinks quite a
bit.
------------------------
Modeling "Clay" Recipe 2
------------------------
2 parts Starch
4 parts Baking Soda
3 parts Water
Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture is dough
like. Cool, covered with a damp cloth. Coat finished products with a
shellac to seal and preserve. Not as coarse as salt clay (recipe 1)
and doesn't shrink quite as much.
------------------------
Modeling "Clay" Recipe 3
------------------------
Starch/Flour
Cellulose Fibers
Volcanic Ash/Clay
Mix and cook over low heat until mixture thickens. Flour may cause
premature exterior hardening and a wet, weak interior.

I also have some really fun, more grownup recipes for cold porcelain and heavy fiber sculpting mixes

It wasn't exactly playdoh but I used to make bread dough without the yeast for my son, it's essentially the same but a little more stretchy. He loved it. If you have a bread maker, just toss everything in and leave it through the first knead cycle.

Whichever recipe you use, make sure it gets refrigerated, it smells to high heaven if left out
