An Alabama lawmaker said his Republican colleagues would change their position on abortion if their daughters were carrying black babies.

State Rep. Alvin Holmes, a Montgomery Democrat, emphatically made the comments Tuesday during a debate on a bill that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat was detected.

The bill passed Tuesday by a 73-29 vote but is certain to face a legal challenge.

The bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, an Indian Springs Republican, compared the measure to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling that overturned segregation.

That apparently offended Holmes, who is black, and he accused abortion opponents of racist hypocrisy.

"Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion," Holmes said. "On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion. They ain't going to let her have the baby."

There was no audible reaction on a recording posted online by the Birmingham News, and Holmes continued.

"Now listen, you know the truth sometimes hurts," he said, and repeated his claim.

"She's got two other white children, and then she's going to have a little black baby, going to be running around there in the living room, in the den with the rest of them," Holmes said. "They're not going to let that happen. You know that and I know that. You will never admit it. You know that and I know that."

Holmes, who made news last month when he called U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "Uncle Tom," said Republicans opposed abortion to fool voters.

"All this stuff about the abortion and this and that, all that's just a con game," he said. "That's for whites; it ain't for blacks."

He recounted a conversation he had with a woman who opposed abortion but intended to pressure her daughter to have an abortion after she became pregnant by a black man.

"I said, "You're not going to let her have that baby," Holmes recalled. "She said, Oh, no. No. She thought I was crazy."

Holmes then turned to McClurkin and asked her whether she would allow her daughter to give birth to a biracial child.

The Republican lawmaker said she would, and told Holmes she would accept the baby into her family.

"(I would) let it run around in my living room and enjoy it as my grandchild," McClurkin said.

Holmes, somewhat incredulously, asked if she would allow the baby to run around "with them other little blond children," and McClurkin agreed.

"Well, I need to commend you, then," Holmes said, chuckling. "It wouldn't be one out of 100,000 to do that."

lol,, not something to say in mixed company for sure

but I agree 'pro lifers' ( of which I am one ) have a lot of hypocrites that claim to be for life in the womb but turn around and don't give two craps about it once it gets here,,,

supporting death penalty and opposing aid for children,,,

I see his point about hypocrisy, but it wasn't the pc thing to bring race into it at all,,

First, Republicans aren't "opposing aid for children". You can try to sell that false claim, but I am not buying it.

Second, in Exodus chapter 21, God Himself requires the state to give the death penalty to those who deliberately commit murder, and no, neither Jesus nor the Apostles did away with the death penalty for murderers.

By the way, Alvin Holmes is doing what has become too common. He is saying that Republicans are guilty of racism until proven innocent.

I didn't say it was republicans, that is just the venue one person was speaking in

I Said 'pro lifers'

many pro lifers are opposed to safety nets that help children that they insisted be born,, that's just truth, ,not aLL pro lifers, but it is certainly more common than is consistent with those who truly CARE about childrens lives

and Exodus was arguably laws given to ISRAELITES( Gods chosen before Jesus sacrifice on the cross), it also 'required' death for anyone who 'attacks' a parent, curses their parent, or accidentally harms a pregnant woman during a fight, or works for 7 days a week,

Exodus 'required' eye for eye for Israelites, but Jesus himself opted to forgive instead and died so that all would have that option of forgiving and being forgiven,,,

and I don't think he said Republicans were guilty as a whole, but if racists are real,,(I say that argumentably because I personally think someone needs to live in a cave not to realize that they are)

there are certainly RACISTS amongst the republican party who CLAIM to be prolife but would crap a brick if their child was having a child with a person who wasn't the right race,,,and would encourage abortion,,,

because the democratic party already lays 'claim' to pro choice,, whether they would choose or not choose abortion becomes irrelevant and consistent with their stand on the issue,,,

Come to think of it, with so many unborn black babies being aborted, it looks to me like the RACISTS in the Democratic Party are already getting what they wish for.

From cnsnews.com: NYC: More Black Babies Killed by Abortion Than Born

In 2012, there were more black babies killed by abortion (31,328) in New York City than were born there (24,758), and the black children killed comprised 42.4% of the total number of abortions in the Big Apple, according to a report by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

I am pro life, I am also pro safety nets, and anti death penalty

and democrat

I am a pro life democrat,,,who is truly opposed to abortion

the perception of the republican in the op is that some of his constituents profess pro life stances but due to their racism aren't truly as pro life as they publicly proclaim

its already conceded that racists are in both parties
its already conceded that pro lifers and pro choicers are in each party

the op was speaking to HIS colleagues about THEIR hypocrisy when they publicly proclaim a pro life stance and privately condone it ,,,

because he pointed out specifically one race, it was a partial and unwise approach

but not untrue, nor untrue that there no doubt some republicans who would likewise crap a brick if their daughter were pregnant with the baby of any other minority,,,,

I don't agree with his approach, but I understand what he is saying about hypocrisy

its not strictly republican or democratic or black or white,,

although many people try to piggy back their issues onto the backs of the civil rights blacks had to fight to receive, and I understand the emotion in the response,,,,

someone not being able to end a pregnancy they CHOSE to risk by CHOOSING sex, is not the same as someone being subjugated for a racial label that was ASSIGNED by others from birth,,,,

I'm pro safety net for those who are out doing and those who honesty can't.

I say, pull the net out from under the leeches who can but won't.

I am also pro responsible parenting. There needs to be set an income guideline. If ya don't make enough to take care of em, ya shouldn't be allowed ta breed em.

China has the right idea.

The biggest welfare recipients in this country are those people sitting in political offices. Their $14,500 per month welfare check, free health care, postage, travel - free everything - comes out of the pocket of every working american. And they are just malingerers in $500 suits. Are you getting your money's worth? Did you ever wonder why a person and their supporters would spend many millions of dollars to try and get a $174,000 a year job? It sure isn't to make the world a better place. It is to funnel as much money as possible themselves and to their supporters, all of which are already very wealthy. Where does the money come from you? US! I think all this effort from parties on both sides of the issue is just to stir up and agitate the masses so they are too busy and angry to notice their pockets being picked. And when you make your living fighting racism, you gotta make sure you have some racism going on, even if you have to create it. Otherwise, you would have to get a regular job like a regular slob (or feller)
