Russia test-fires ICBM amid tension over Ukraine
MOSCOW Tue Mar 4, 2014 7:08pm GMT

(Reuters) - Russia said it had successfully test-fired an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) on Tuesday, with tensions high over its seizure of control in the Crimea and its threat to send more forces to its neighbour Ukraine.

The Strategic Rocket Forces launched an RS-12M Topol missile from the southerly Astrakhan region near the Caspian Sea and the dummy warhead hit its target at a proving ground in Kazakhstan, the state-run news agency RIA cited Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Yegorov as saying.

Yeah, Odumbo's methodology is the knife to the back. Maybe that's why the evil plastic face devil is there to keep things stirred up until Odumbo can get the back turned.

Hey and I love how the US and Britain jumped right out there to recognize their IMF puppet. Is this going to be another Arab Spring in the Ukraine?

tin stated earlier that Russian forces haven't entered Ukraine. I have to give it to John Kerry, but his reaction was priceless today when a reporter told him that he smiled and said something to the basic affect of you've got to be kidding me. Putin said that old Soviet Uniforms went missing during the cold war do did a lot of tanks and vehicles. He expects us to believe that.

Then he states tonight that Nazi's are taking over Ukraine. Cause Nazi symbols have appeared and a few people who were wearing Nazi arm bands who were then identified as Russian's.

This is EVERYTHING Hitler did.

Poland is now requesting NATO to come to the table because they are afraid of their safety because their borders are in the region of the conflict and Russia has over 150,000 armed forces at the border of Ukraine, that has invasion written all over it.

Still don't have a clue, believe anything mass media tells you.

American policy is based upon — dependent upon — a raging, willful, arrogant ignorance of other peoples, other cultures, history in general, and even the recent history of U.S. policy itself. The historical and cultural relationships between Ukraine and Russia are highly complex. Russia takes its national identity from the culture that grew up around what is now Kyiv; indeed, in many respects, Kyiv is where "Russia" was born. Yet one of the first acts of the Western-backed revolutionaries was to pass a law declaring Ukrainian as the sole state language, although most of the country speaks Russian or Surzhyk, "a motley mix of Ukrainian and Russian (sometimes with bits of Hungarian, Romanian and Polish)," as the LRB’s Peter Pomerantsev details in an excellent piece on Ukraine's rich cultural and linguistic complexity. This is not to say that Ukrainians are not justified in being wary of Russia's embrace. Millions of Ukrainians died in the 1930s from the famine caused by inhuman policies imposed by a Moscow government (although that government was itself headed by a Georgian, in the name of a trans-national ideology). The complexity and volatility is always there. Today, as Smith puts it, "many Ukrainians see room for closer relations with the West; the more sensible seem to favor a variant of "third way" thinking, no either/or frame. Many fewer desire a decisive break with Russia."

Yet at every turn, the new Western-backed government in Kyiv has stomped hard on these volatile fault-lines, pushing stringent anti-Russian policies, with Western governments pretending that this would have no consequences, no reverberations in Moscow. What's more, the neo-fascist factions that played a leading role in the uprising are now calling for Ukraine to become a nuclear power again, having given up the Soviet nuclear weaponry on its territory in 1994. Indeed, hard-right leader Oleh Tyahnybok made nuclear re-armament one of the planks of his presidential race a few years ago. Now the party is sharing power in the Western-brokered government; will we soon see Ukraine added to the ranks of nuclear nations? With a bristling nuclearized frontier with Russia - like the hair-trigger holocaust flashpoint between India and Pakistan?

Again we see the blind stupidity of arrogance, of entitlement, as the "Washington consensus" of elitist neo-liberalism continues its blundering away around the world.

I think Putin will sit on his gains (Crimea) and bide his time for the rest of the Ukraine.

This is an old ploy.

Capture what you want. Move or threaten something else. Negotiate to eliminate the threat to "something else" while keeping what you want in the deal.

As far as the Russian ICBM goes, I think it was done as a threat to the US navy specifically. As the USSR fell, so did it's navy. Oil money is only now allowing Russia to begin rebuilding it. If the US was to bring in a full fleet of naval vessels, Russia could not show a matching force. However, If we were to send our Navy over there, we would be putting them within range of the Russian Air Force and missile batteries.

One nuke can take out most of a carrier battle fleet.

But not what he has done in the past...

Skullduggery in Ukraine

In passing, I would like to address one of the hoariest canards of the Ukraine crisis: that Russian would recapitulate its actions of 2008, when it invaded Georgia. This assertion has been made by Reuters, AP, and I think quite a few others.

The facts—internationally recognized facts, I should say—was that Georgia used the occasion of the Beijing Olympics to launch a carefully planned invasion to recapture the breakaway province of South Ossetia—which was at the time autonomous under a truce agreement negotiated by Russia, Georgia, and the Ossetians in Sochi in 1993. The Georgians massed 12,000+ troops against 1000 Russian peacekeepers and a few hundred Ossetian militia. Georgia had apparently not anticipated a Russian intervention, and its forces were completely routed when the Russians indeed counterattacked.

Hopefully, the Georgia parallel will stand up in one regard: that the Russians promptly withdrew from Georgian territory after their objectives were met. And they did not annex South Ossetia; they allowed it to declare independence instead.

Better to have a friend on your border than to have an enemy in your midst.
