ok this might be a simple fix but i have no idea how to do it.

my desktop display just up and quit working right i did have a pic set as the background no all i get is a blue. have went in to the control panel and it wont let me change any of the pics.
one other thing when pc is booting up the pic comes up and looks like it is set in tiles instead of one pic the it just go to a blank screen.

have you added a graphics card? or are you using the onboard graphics card?

i'm not sure but you may need to log on as administrator to change it. really not familiar with laptops. If it's not letting you change it then it may be a driver issue or the hardware itself.

check in device manager and look under display adapters for any kind of conflicts.

before u do that if you have xp you can fix this by going to system tools then system restore an go to the previous time before that happen that should do the trick. only reason i like xp is cause of that it always helps

i would use that as a last option not a 1st...if all else fails then do a restore, and even that may not fix the problem if it's a hardware issue

if you are using windows xp (i think this works with 98 and me also) if you are then find the picture file on your hardrive, maybe on your desktop, where ever you put the picture and open it up with "windows picture and fax viewer" which is the default program that is used when you install windows, so it should open up with that.

anyway when you have it open just RIGHT click on it and in the dropdown menu that appears select "set as desktop background.

that's it, it's a lot simpler than it seems from what I've written.

good luck.

Try hitting control+alt+delete, do you get a message along the lines of your administrator has set permissions or something? (for XP)

I would still run at least a scan or two on your system.
You can try one of them that I use at http://nail.erwhat.com.
It wil pickup a wide variety of crap that can get onto your machine.
