The Pen
By Ronnie Lee Jeffires A pen is a common instrument that is daily used by everyone. Once a young boy found a pen in his grandfather’s nightstand and asked him if he could keep it. The grandfather told his grandson that he could keep it, and also asked what he planned to do with it. To which the grandson replied that he longed to be a writer. The boy’s grandfather told him that he should make sure that being a writer was what he really wanted to do, because writers wielded much power and with that power came responsibility. The boy being of a very young age quickly told his grandfather that he was sure of his path and put the pen in his pocket. The boy treasured the pen and wrote stories about dragons, dinosaurs, and other assorted fairytales, but as the boy got older even though he continued to write diligently and passionately he soon realized that his boyhood writings of dragons, dinosaurs, and fairytales had evolved into deeper subjects of love, friendships, and romance. Many years later the boy was no longer a boy, but an old man with silver hair and wrinkled calloused skin as his grandfather had been. The old man still wrote every day, but his stories now spoke of lessons learned, regrets, and distant memories. It was in this ripe old age that the old man finally realized what his grandfather had meant by saying “With writing comes great responsibility.” Because as writers, the pen is more than just what we use to put the words on the page, the pen is also a storehouse of memories, some good, some bad, and some we try to forget. The ink within a pen is usually blue or black, but the colors they produce in the mind’s eye are much more vivid, from the green grass of spring to the grey clouds of winter. |

Wealth
By Ronnie Lee Jeffires A man who had lived a good long life once pondered his overall success in life. The man being very intelligent decided that before he tried to determine how successful he had been in life he first had to determine what he would define as success and what standards he would use to judge it. The man knew that the world often judged success by three things wealth, material possessions, and knowledge. The man did not like using these standards because he felt they were not accurate measures of success and so he decided to ponder his success and judge it for himself using his own standards. The man began to think back on the events of his life and realized that as far as material possessions he had very few but what he did have he cherished. When it came to knowledge the man was not lacking he had a college degree after all but he found his common sense was more useful than any knowledge a university could impart to him. As far as wealth he had none coming from a modest upbringing of modest means. The man realized that by society’s standards he would in no way be considered wealthy but then he had a revelation come flooding into his brain like a river overflowing its banks. The man realized that he did not have many material possessions but he did have clothes to cover his body ad shoes on his feet and there were people who did not have those. When it came to knowledge he knew enough to take care of himself and help others and that seemed valuable to him. When it came to wealth although he never had much money he had enough to get by and the truth was there was always enough he had always had all the necessities he needed and he was surrounded by a loving family so upon careful consideration the man decided that he had led an extremely successful life and was in fact a very wealthy man. |
