Topic: I Used To Be Beautiful | |
---|---|
The other day a woman came to visit her husband who has end stage Alhmeizer's Disease, she was trying to get him to recognize her and was saying quite loudly "do you know who I am? look at me, I'm your wife, I used to be beautiful" he just sat there, in his own world and finally she gave up trying to get him to communicate with her and I wanted to go over to her and tell her, you're still beautiful, but I didn't want to break the spell of them sitting closely together, thinking.

I had to watch my Gran die with Alzheimers, in 1985, when I was 13. Having to watch my Grandad, nurse her and watch as she would say to my Grandad ' Who are you? Get away from me! ' Hard things for a man to hear from his wife of nearly 62 years? My Grandad would come out of the room with tears running down his face, but he would try to put on a brave face for the family, but he was broken inside. When she died, part of him did too, but he would still make sure that his kids and his Grandkids came first. My Gran was a brilliant woman, but my Grandad was just a one-off! I'll never meet another man like him again!
