Do you think another person can make you happy? After pondering this thought for quite a while, I have came to the conclusion that only you can make yourself happy. Another person can contribute to the level of your happiness, but, cannot turn you from sad to happy. Without a bunch of intense philosophical theories, from your own experience, can another person make you be happy, or is it a function of your own mental action?

Another person can make you happyER, but you are on the right track; nobody can make you happy in the long term but yourself.

Take it from me; I am yoda when it comes to being happy. drinker

I agree, willy_cents. One's emotions are not controlled by others. Other people may engage in activities which you dislike, or find distasteful, or find delightful. One is responsible for one's own emotional state (although a large fraction prefer chemical enhancement of some sort).

Happiness comes from within
no one can give it to you

they may add to your happiness, but it's a temporary state

spiritual joy can't be beat
it's a great feeling

 If someone was lost on a desert island for 10 years and
then a stranger floated a shore, YES,,,THAT PERSON WOULD MAKE THE OTHER ONE VERY HAPPY...

NOW, short of THAT sanero,,,NO, no one can find THEIR peace, with-in another w/o first finding one's own piece inside them..

But I do know that peace and happy with your self, YOU can still feel a large VOID inside YOU, until you find another person to share each day with...BUT you have already found,
YOUR PIECE OF HEART in you...

I would say another person can enhance your life, by their sheer presence, or their perspectives, or by bringing new and positive influences into your own personal sphere.

Happiness is something else entirely. I see it as intrinsic, separate and apart from anything external.

To have someone to share your own happiness with is quite an experience....but I have never seen a (healthy) circumstance where the happiness is contingent upon the other person.

That would be more of an addiction or a dependency, I would think....

Intersting thread...I was discussing a subject with a friend the other day, we are both studying the same course, and we talked about emotions...specifically 'happiness'.

In our round about ramblings, commonly known as psycho babble..laugh we both arrived at a place where we see 'happiness' as a temporary emotion...fleeting and often placed as dependent on circumstances, things, people...whereas joyful, comes from a sense of inner contentment, and acceptance, and is a more sustainable emotion.

So can someone 'make' you happy? Only if you choose it. Personally, I have a defiance disorder, and dont let anyone 'make' me do anything.

Jess.....actually I love psycho babble and Im continuously analyzing....and analyzing my anayzling....bah can't spell it right now........

I think it becomes a circle jerk of sorts.....round and round....different emotions at different times...do you think we all feel happy all the time???? I think we can portray it alot.....and also be happy at different times.......along with all the other emotions........flowerforyou

Gypsy, for me....the more I have 'grown' up, rather than groan up.. the calmer my world, both inner and outer become...don't get me wrong, there have been depressions, times of sadness, loss and a sense of failure...and peaks of happiness, but my aim, my inner goal, is to cut the drama, and the 'chasing the highs', and find the even keel.

For me, the less the pendulum swings, the closer I get to feeling that inner calm..that zen like feeling...less reactionary to drama, and people, and less crazy highs.

I think of my son's observations, when in Timor..of the villagers, and their children, dirt poor, as far as material possesions go, oppressed with conflict and civil unrest, and yet, the children laughed and smiled, and seemed to be constantly joyful, and the older members of the villages were calm, perhaps not as joyful as the kids, but an air of sereneness.

Others I have spoken with have witnessed that also, in some of the most dsperately poor countries, their is joy.

I find the word, and the emotion we tend to attach to the word 'happy' to be a shallow emotion, as in it doesn't last..

Whereas joyful is a lifestyle...a constant way of being.
