I have DSL, yet it takes 5 forevers for a page, any page, to load. The connection is 100 mbps. Is that a good connection? Is it my computer that is bogged down? What can I do it it is the computer? I have defrag., scanned. Have pity!!!

check make sure you don't have any spy ware or too much stuff running in the background. With DSL stuff should load in a matter of seconds.

open task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and see what your processor and memory are doing...if either is maxed out...then you have a bug in your puter somewhere...adwade, spyware, trojan or something. click the "performance" tab. On mine, with vista, and half a dozen programs running, my processor is about 45% and my memory usage is around 600 meg out of two gig

www.dslreports.com
on this site you can do a tweak test and a speed test and a few others. dsl is ok when working right but at times it can slow down to 56k speeds due to rain or just a cloudy day. |

Download:
SpyBot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0 Use HouseCall... http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/free_security_tools/pc-cillin_free_trial.php ...click the "HouseCall™ Free Scan" link on the left hand side of the screen and follow the instructions. And you might want to purchase SWDoctor. http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google77&gclid=CN3px7e0vI4CFQQjPAodUwGZxA |

WhispersandWinks,
Windows defrag is useless. Try the one below or purchase one. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Disk_Maintenance_and_Repair_Utilities/Auslogics_Disk_Defrag_Screenshot.html It could be your hardware, can you tell us what you are running? Do you have sneaky, teenage kids? They might be looking at porn (which installs all sorts of nasty malware, spyware and adware), so a NetNanny type software might be in order. |

If your still checking back here at this post, this is what i recommend. It sounds like you may have some security issues, probably some sort of malware. There is a lot out there that many antivirus/spyware programs wont recognize. The other problem is that if it is found after it installs it is registered in your system volume files which system restore uses to create your last restore point. Security programs cannot access these files so you wont get rid of it easily. If you want some help get me a email and i will have you download Hijack this. This will create a log I can look at of whats going on with your computer. I have been doing this for a long time. If your infected, I can help you safely clean things up.

Kinda funny...every bodies 1st assumption is virri or adware...and you tell her download this and download that when it may not be anymore than a slow connection...she says she has a 100 mbps connection but if you look at your local area connection it always says 100 mbps...that is not her actual speed. DSL is well known for incredibly slow speed at times, which would cause the problem she has. Rather than download a bunch of software she may not need why not check to see what her actual downstream is? I can assure you it's not 100mbps That doesn't mean i'm correct but it should always be the starting point, then proceed from there. It could very well save a lot of time and headaches.

stevewm,
Regardless of what her internet connection is, everyone should have anti-virus and anti-spyware software. A good defragger and registry compactor is a good thing to have too. |

yes I agree with you spider 100%
but her problem was with her browser taking forever to load when a web page loads slow is that the 1st thing you assume? no...you check your internet speed...if that is up to par then you check for spyware/adware and virii...which you should always have that software installed anyway. I know everybodies intentions were good but i think you would agree on what i said...it could very well save time and headaches. |
