In a surprise move, the Obama administration essentially lifted the individual mandate last night for anyone who saw their insurance policy cancelled thanks to the Affordable Care Act, just days before the Dec. 23 deadline to sign up for Jan. 1 coverage. These consumers will be able to apply for a hardship exemption if they think the plans on the government-run exchanges are too expensive, allowing them to buy bare-bones "catastrophic" coverage instead, or simply duck the requirement entirely, the Washington Post reports.

• The change is a response to pressure from a dozen Democratic senators, most facing tough reelection campaigns, who said the administration hadn't done enough to help people bitten by the law. They issued a statement last night saying they were pleased, but would "closely monitor how the administration implements this option."

• Marco Rubio, meanwhile, took the chance to gloat, saying the administration was "recognizing the grim reality that more Americans have lost health insurance than gained it," Politico reports.

• The administration actually believes that there are fewer than 500,000 people who lost coverage and haven't signed up for new plans yet, though officials admit that's just their best guess.

• Insurance companies are furious. "This latest rule change could cause significant instability," one industry group told the New York Times, while an anonymous official tells the Post that they're worried people with exemptions will wait until they get sick to sign up.

• Many insurers were already having trouble getting people on board before the deadline, the Wall Street Journal reported today. "We've had some people telling us it's too close to the holidays," one official said.

• The move came a day after insurers agreed—thanks to administration pressure—to push back the deadline for customers to pay their first premium to Jan. 10, the Huffington Post reports. They have, however, rebuffed the administration's request that they in January cover drugs that they don't cover, but that may have been covered under a consumer's previous plan.

guess this is for those states that didn't reinstate the cancelled policies...Obama is now a dictator...tweaking the affordable care act at will as he sees fit...another futile attempt to right a ship that is sinking...

Not troubled with facing re-election, why should he worry what any of his policies do to America..... not that he ever cared to begin with......

He's hoping Hillary is elected to exempt him from prosecution for his crimes after leaving office..... But the Ice Queen may have a surprise for him should voters be that stupid.... she's better at throwing people under the bus than he will ever be

My guess is he'll write an EO before he is impeached or leaves office

this is the core issue of the problem of politicians suddenly deciding that they are MBA/CEO worthy.

the job of gov't is to administer justice NOT business and legislate, keep a military. that's it. period.

the unfortunate truth is that Obama has done what has been needed and it took him long enough. the fact that it probably violates some kind of procedural issue just makes the fact that he shouldn't even be involved in the first place a more glaring a faus pas.

He should be regulating the healthcare debacle not running it

The problem with that is that gov't shouldn't be involved in healthcare at all!

I tend to agree as far as nationalizing healthcare which is what Obamacare does in its intended form. I do think we need some support programs like medicare tho' In America no one should "fall thru the cracks" Not everyone has their military retirement or corporate healthcare retirement...geez even GM stopped offerring that a couple decades ago...

Until gov't is brought back under control of the people to where it actually starts working for us again instead of favoring banks and corporations, there will always be a people in need.

One size does not fit all, and when gov't has a hammer in hand everything is a nail.

Restrictions, prohibitions, mandates and regulations ties the hands of the people to provide or create for themselves. If the people would see the reality of what gov't is.....control.... instead of believing the lie it has the public interest at heart, perhaps we would see how fruitless their involvement in our personal lives really is...

Just look around to see the reality of their "help"

I just got the bill for my new insurance policy and it's 38% higher.
Not 38% higher than my canceled policy.....38% higher than the price I was quoted for my new policy when I signed up at the Blue Cross Blue Shield service center last week.

I can hardly wait to see what surprises I will encounter when I use my new insurance.
