Topic: Welfare recipient says working is stupid. | |

cell phones aren't a need unless you are on welfare this is why, if one is on welfare, often times, they STILL Have to work,,,if they are looking to better their situation to find BETTER Work,, they do need a way to contact employers when not at home (Which taxpayers don't want them to be if they are on the taxpayers dollar),,,thus, a cell phone is very important as a resource to GET OFF OF WELFARE,,, as to the rest, people are confused about what matters ,, it is not about INCOME exclusively,, it is about RESOURCES,,, someone can not be working at all, have investments, have savings, have family, have friends, etc,,,,,all these things are resources which are AS GOOD AS MONEY so, in ISaacs case, obviously, despite income, that family had RESURCES two parents,, meaning one can work at an earned income job and the other can work caring for children and animals savings to pick up and move, moving expenses, first and last month and security, and farm animals to boot ,,,its always interesting to note those who are boastful (not necessarily Isaac) about how they never resorted to welfare also saying they qualified you would be surprised what does or doesn't qualify , and resources are considered as well as able bodied adults involved most would also be surprised to learn how many are 'working' that are in need of and receiving welfare,,,,,,as opposed to just sitting around and getting a check its a needed program because millions of people without ANY RESOURCES will fall upon hard times and need help, and in a country this wealthy, there is no excuse (in my mind) for them not to receive it,,,especially in return for WORKING And contributing to society in the many ways that the working poor and single parents and elderly have and do every day First never said anything about my parents being able-bodied parents, don't make assumptions. Second, Welfare NOW DISCOURAGES work by it's very DESIGN! So this "working" to get off is really no longer a viable option.Frankly now it has become a myth, and one touted by many supporters of the program. Case in point, I have friend who is working PART time, and receiving federal aid, she has an autistic kid, who was receiving care paid for by the government, she wanted to get full-time work, and her company even offered it to her...however, once she received that first check her benefits cut off completely, including the care for her kid, being that it is a pre-existing condition he would not be covered under her companies health-car so now she would have to pay for his care OUT OF POCKET, The solution? The government tells her DON'T WORK FULL TIME!, instead stay on the system, so either A. A miracle happens and she jumps in salary by 10's of thousands of dollars, or she stays on welfare. Which one's more realistic? Working to get off welfare, even for those that have that desire(many don't hence this thread), it doesn't really allow for that. As I've stated I don't mind assisting those that truly need it, but that doesn't mean that we should tell an 18yr single-mother it is ok to have more kids because the government will take care of them(I know a few that think that way), I don't think my taxes should go to medical expenses for not only the birth expenses, but then also the clothing, food, and other expenses for someones bad choices. I don't think my taxes should go to the person who is "disabled" because he is 500lbs and "can't work"(I know those too), We are a culture of GENERATIONAL welfare right now, Grandma was on it, Son is on it, Daughter of son is on it and so forth. This SHOULD NEVER happen, but it does, because we are a materialistic society and think things like Cell-phones are a necessity, they are not. Most employers now don't even CALL people, most applications are done ONLINE, and applicants are contacted THROUGH EMAIL! Both of which are free at the local library, many have phones available as well. I don't disagree with Welfare entirely, I just think it needs revamped BIG TIME, It needs a tiered system(so it encourages work), it needs TIME LIMITS on the tiers, the definition of what a NEED is needs clarified, and it needs FOLLOW UP, They are talking about what this country needs is a PATH TO CITIZENSHIP, what it needs is a PATH OFF WELFARE. |

it was revamped along time ago, ,people continue to read about exceptions and assume they are the rule
I was on it, recently, while out of work, and I Worked with others on it as my job was in a housing complex my assistance was INCOME BASED< not based upon pt or ft status, I Was REQUIRED to work 100 hour per month in return for a 300 chck (not from the company who had no funds to actually HIRE Anyone but still got my efforts and time, but from the dhs instead) 5 hrs per day, 5 days per week, and with no land line of my own at the time, being that I stayed with family, I needed a phone to try and find full time wrk which I Was finally able to generational welfare is very rare, as there are lifetime caps on assistance,,,, 3-5 years per lifetime in most cases, with proof of a disability or dependent not yet in school, which prevents gainful employment,, |

Folks, when you are talking about welfare, please specify what kind.
If in the USA, are you talking about SSI, SSDI, unemployment or something else? Is welfare a big issue in nations other than the USA? |
