My dad is in a nursing and the majority of the nurses and aides are really good, some are just so-so. When he was first in there a couple of years ago after his brain bleed and surgery, had a new aide being rough with a neighboring patient, my dad told her not to be so rough with him - she took my dad's light cord and put it up out of his reach for the night. He had had burr holes in his head and couldn't get out of bed by himself, was pretty disabled even before that. I told him to tell the administrator, he wouldn't, finally did tell the head nurse but months later. The girl should have been fired for that. He could have had a major heart attack or bathroom need, whatever, but could not call for help, his roommate had a stroke and couldn't even talk. A couple of times dad used his light to get help for the roommate too, so she actually endangered the roommates life too by doing that.
He came home after recovering from his surgery, took about 8 weeks. Just went in for long term care last December and has been really well this time.

Just got out of an inservice. Where we work we have to attend atleast 12 yearly to keep our license. This month was infection control and cross contamination. The most important thing is always wash your hands going into a room and coming out of a room. Got to learn a new term called 'cohorting' where is two have the same disease they can be put into a room together. In our facility we have to go to the inservice before we can pick up out checks. Life is always about learning new things. We thing we learned is that even visitors have to be aware of cross contamination when they visit a loved one. They have to wear the same personal protective equipment as staff if they touch a resident who is infected. Shows like the X Files and CSI have good showings of how to wear things like the gowns, gloves and even face shields in some instances. The biggest threat to hospitals and nursing homes is staff infection now according to what we are hearing. Something that occured to me is that cross contamination can also be something that one think of when thinking of emotions, too. For instance, when one has a difficult person to deal with it is good to resolve it before being with another person. Our nurse's report between shifts have gotten better. The place is getting more friendlier. Reminds me of an old episode of "Dragnet" - "Just the facts m'am". It is amazing how care facilities have become better but it is like a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Everyone in a facility has to work together and sometimes that can be a challenge.flowerforyou
