I end up staying up not because I'm an insomniac but because I am working on a picture or something like that.

Looking at TV and goofing on the computer is usually what gives me insomnia.

That and consuming anything with caffeine.

Things that cure it;

Making sure I take my vitamin D and try to keep my diet healthy.

Avoiding foods I know I am allergic too. Some foods blow up my inflammation. Intensely colored foods wire me up. Foods with Lactose definitely are going to make hitting the bathroom in the time I am hoping to rest. Alcohol is not a "food" but I know there is a definite physical reaction and it just is not worth messing up my sleep and making me exhausted and miserable.

Doing something that curbs my pain before it gets too far gone. Weather that is massage, getting in the hot tub, practicing relaxation techniques, excluding people who push my buttons from my life, hiring help for things that are just too physically difficult for me, and taking medication.

Having a budget and following it on a monthly basis, an annual basis, and long term level. Having some rainy day money and insurance. Teaching those skills to my kids when they were young. Knowing what I really can afford and refusing to be in debt for things I can not. I spend very few nights laying awake worrying over bills.

Making my home secure. That took a while after I was burglarized but going through the courts system making sure they at least got the minimal punishment they did help me safe to sleep.

Keeping things that I feel are toxic out of my life and especially my home. I Don't keep things that generate bad memories, bad dreams, or conflict with my values or faith in my home. I ditched pictures, documents, momento's, gift's, and clothing of people who I do not want in my thoughts. You won't find anything of my Exhusband in my home. And only minimal things of my late husband; no photos in my bedroom. I found I could not move forward and sleep peacefully if I was trying to escape my grief in sleep. I limit dealing with things or people that upset me in my home period. I rarely read, watch tv, or movies that deal with upsetting things especially near rest time or bed time.

I do not bring work home. When I was younger I tried running a home business and I found it was very hard on my sleep because I never felt like I was truly home or off duty.

Developing friendships that help me not feel depressed, lonely, or like I do not have good advisors. Feeling at Peace does a lot for helping me sleep. Being needed by family and friends does a lot to encourage me to care for myself including getting quality rest.

Being as physically active as I can each day. My evening walk is a great way for me to unwind. If I can't walk I at least do basic exercises.

I have developed a sleep prep routine that helps me unwind.

Last and probably most important is I make my sleep environment comfortable to me. No blinking electronics, unplug the phone, comfortable bed/pillows, the right degree of light, temperature, and ventilation for me, I sleep in what is comfortable. And now that I am retired rarely a clock/alarm.

"what do you do when you can't sleep?"

I eat, of course.
A bowl of soup is best for a cold night.
