I don't care who's fault it is, when a child dies, it is heartbreaking. Can you imagine being the parent and not being able to do anything to help your child. That is sad. brokenheart

Exactly Unsure....No matter what, my heart goes out to this woman....

i feel a bit sad for her, but then again, at some point in life some kind of common sense has to prevail...

how close to the fence does a person holding a child need to be?

if something can happen, then people should take precautions to keep it from happening...

i don't think she took any precautions...

DIdn't know this was going to come complete with a picture of the little boy:cry: ...Things like this are made even worse when they are displayed and debated, evaluated and judged by people who haven't got even a fraction of the information needed to assess the mother's or the zoo's negligence...The only thing that deserves discussion is what all Zoo and animal parks can (and should) do to make sure accidents like this one never happen again..If I sound preachy, tough chit...This one made me very sad and I get kinda pizzy when I am sad...ohwell

Its pretty clear what happened so I don't know why there is any debate, she screwed up and did something stupid and now its someone elses fault. Glass for exhibits are never so dirty you cannot see through them, I call ******** on that.

Were you there?

Obviously she picked the kid up and held him over the god dam railing other wise he would not have fallen into the enclosure unless he sprouted wings long enough to get off the ground and over the railing then lost them again. Again, no personal accountability. Always somebody elses fault.

If you are convinced the mother is an idiot you should be equally convinced that any zoo housing killer animals should be required to make their facilities idiot proof.....Simple

maybe the point is that since the mother did everything to put the child into the harmful situation (she picked him up over the protective railing, she lost her grip when he leaned forward) she could have jumped over the railing and fought off the dogs for a few seconds until they got her. but i'm sure she knew that it was way to dangerous to go over the protective rail

this is not to mention the rotten luck of the child bouncing off the safety net. i mean the zoo had a protective rail, a protective plexiglas, and a protective net

Mine as well, the zoo had the protective barriers in place, but as has already been said,l you can't fix stupid. There were warning up and the mother ignored them, she chose to lift her son up over the railing and did not make sure she had a firm grip on the child. How long are we going to go on blaming everyone else for our own mistakes? The child didn't deserve what happened to him but it wouldn't have happened if the mom had obeyed the safety protocals, in a zoo with wild animals.

Far too often I pick up the paper or turn on the news only to learn another child has been murdered by an abusive parent...Some of the cases reported the abuse continued over a period of years...Some of the children were starved to death by drug addicted parents, some were beaten to death, some were dumped in the garbage after birth...So many horrifying cases of neglect and abuse at the hands of "idiot" men and women...In all of these cases the parents were prosecuted and sentenced...In this case, while taking her son on an outing, a mother made a horrendous mistake that cost his life...After the initial investigation that included interviews with eye witnesses who had to restrain the mom from climbing the rail and entering the pit in an attempt to save her baby, it was concluded that no criminal charges would be filed against the zoo or the mother...However, the investigation of zoo facilities is ongoing...The open platform and the net placed below it to catch "small" items like cameras and phones was not enough to prevent this tragedy...This mother and father will live with the consequences of her mistake for the rest of their lives...They will suffer and they will never have another opportunity to live a normal life unencumbered by guilt and remorse...To have no empathy for the mother is bad enough, but to ridicule and condemn her is beyond comprehension...Talk about idiocy...

so every mother should do stupid things like lifting their child over a protective barrier? i have no empathy for people with no common sense... building "idiot" proof viewing areas just drives the cost up on things, when all it really takes is common sense. building things for idiots is also bad in another way, it teaches people not to think for themselves, and takes away any sort of personal responcibilty that we should all have...

The zoo is libel to a degree in offering such an exhibit. They should take in to account the stupidity, education or literacy of their patrons. The human element can always be expected act on impulse, and not all impulses are thought out before acted upon.

Personally, I don't like the idea of caging any animal except when needed for medical care, transport or safety reasons, but to each their own.

i didn't make the world the way it is, it costs money to do these things... wouldn't it be cheaper to teach people to think for themselves rather than to just ignore their stupidity? she could read, i'm sure, but she choose to ignore the signs... common sense tells me not to stand against a wall and not lift my kids over it, but i'm guessing she choose to ignore that as well... sorry, i cannot blame the zoo on this, and the only empathy i have is for the boy, who is completely blameless on this...

all she had to do was step back about a foot, then the kid would be still alive..

You have nailed it perfectly!  ...And about selling tickets to view caged animals, I could not agree more!...African paint dogs are "pack" killers by nature (there's that word again Moe) and should not be caged in "packs" in the first place....

You are usually pretty quick on the uptake...How come you are going deaf and blind on this one? ...You can't teach common sense and, as Soul said, people act on impulse all the time...The only way to safeguard against fatalities is to do everything possible to cover all the bases...Unfortunately, that zoo failed to do so....And who you have empathy for is not my issue Moe...My issue is about ridiculing the mom...I don't believe in kicking a dog when it's down....Plus, as a mom, I can understand how something like that might happen....I'm wondering how many two year old kids you have taken to the zoo....

the childs death is a tragedy

as is the litigiousness of this country

mom should have known better, the zoo doesn't deserve to be penalized for her bad judgment

my heart goes out to her

mother should have been charged with at least child endangerment

and possibly manslaughter and murder if investigation showed her

discontentment at the child

If we start regulating risk what would be the fun of living?
