Johnson needed the black vote as much as any president did,, mlk was in the forefront of the political requests of black people

and let freedom ring is not the exclusive right of carey or king, and has been quoted in many a speech

the two speeches aren't the same beside that portion where they both use SOMEONE ELSES work,,,,

Funny how Johnson was "forced" to sign the voting rights act because the republican controlled congress gave him a veto proof bill. Most democrats (specially southern ones) were completely against giving blacks, minorities and women the freedom to vote.
Thank God for the republican party(Abraham Lincoln too)!
Funny how the modern democrats have swept that part of history under the ruglaugh laugh

I wasn't there to validate the claim of johnsons mindset in signing the bill , rather voluntary or forced

I have researched however , and found that most (maybe ALL, I have to look again) the SOUTHERNERS in both dem and rep were against civil rights legislation, and the opposite was true of northerners in both parties

I don't think that needs to be swept under the rug, nor does it need to be equated to more of a political party question, than it is a north vs south question,,,

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

My question is why no black(or white) conservative was aloud to speak at an event that was supposedly in honor of a man who preached inclusion of all people?
Wonder if the whole "dream" has been hijacked by left-wing zealots for their own political agenda...just a thoughtwhat

why do you assume they weren't 'allowed'?

just curious,,,

The Rev. Leah D. Daughtry, who served as executive producer of the commemoration, told the Washington Post’s O’Keefe that her committee began inviting members of Congress to attend four or five weeks before the event.

“We had a very concerted effort, because this is not a political moment. This was about us coming together as a community, so we wanted to be sure that we had all political representations,” Daughtry said. “We attempted very vigorously to have someone from the GOP participate and unfortunately they were unable to find someone who was able to participate.”

That's B.S....even the only black Senator(Tim Scott) was never invited. You would think the only sitting black member of the Senate would be invited just because of how rare that is, but of course he is a republican. He said he was never approached or invited to speak or attend the ceremony. He like other conservative blacks were never asked to SPEAK at the event.

first, it was a CIVIL RIGHTS Event,, whites were there too

second, because EVERY republican was not invited ,doesn't mean that some republicans weren't invited

better question is why didn't any of those who WERE INVITED show up?

LMAO..are you that naive to believe that they could not find at least one black or white republican to come and speak?
This sounds more like they wanted it to fit in there never ending mantra of republicans want children to starve, throw old people over cliffs, against better education and are only interested in big corporations.
The house speaker,Boehner was the only one I know that was invited and was only given two week notice,of which he already had plans.

oops,, looks as if congress all got a form invitation,, including Scott,, whose office declined alleging he had previous engagement,,,

The Senate’s only black lawmaker wasn’t invited to speak at Wednesday’s 50th anniversary March on Washington, because Tim Scott’s office declined an invitation to attend the ceremony as a spectator, according to a source connected to the event.

“Much of the speaking program was created based on those who were able to confirm availability to attend the event, and thus were able to speak at the event,” the source explained.

And based on an email exchange obtained by CQ Roll Call, the South Carolina Republican did receive an invitation to attend the festivities commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.’s delivery of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

The invitation, sent Aug. 8 from the Coalition for the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, appears to have been a form letter to all members of Congress, with invitees listed as “Representative” rather than by name.

Within a day, Rachel Shelbourne, a staff assistant to Scott, had replied to the email with the following message:

“Thank you for extending to Senator Tim Scott the invitation to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington on August 28th. Unfortunately, the Senator will be in South Carolina during this time, so he will be unable to attend the event. Please do, however, keep him in mind for future events you may be hosting.”

well, if you believe its less naïve to believe no one was invited, than it is to believe those invited didn't come

that's your prerogative

as posted,, there was an invite sent to all of congress to determine who was free

some at least bothered to respond with why they wouldn't be there,,,

Of course they invited everyone...the difference is like being invited to a wedding and being asked to be IN the wedding.. Everyone was invited to come(even the general public)but no one was specifically asked to speak except from the liberal left.
This is more dis-information to show they were "invited" but not to participate...two completely different things!!!

have you ever organized something?

you first have to know who can SHOWUP

you don't select people to speak and others to merely invite, because than the invitees all get offended they weren't asked to speak

the classy thing to do is first get a list of attendees, which you only get by inviting and finding out who is and is not free on the date

then

from those who respond they are free,, you choose speakers,,,

seriously?

So let me get this straight, If you wanted to ask your best friend to be your maid of honor at your wedding, you would first ask her if she can come to your wedding before you ask her to be your maid of honor? Maybe she would cancel all her plans if she had the honor to PARTICIPATE

1st, I would be organizing a wedding much longer than 4 or 5 weeks in advance and those involved would be in PERSONAL contact with me already to know about the plans

my best friend would know the date and be IN TOUCH WITH ME,, I would not need to even SEND A FORMAL OR INFORMAL invitation

or say 'can you please be my maid of honor at the wedding on such and such a date?'

ya think those organizing this event had best friend status with any of the senators?

and how is any of that relevant to no one even SHOWING UP?

regardess if the invitation was to attend or speak,,,,none of them could find the time to MAKE THE EVENT<,,

that's garbage that is indefensible

a conspiracy to keep them out of involvement except that:

Speaker John A. Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the Houses two most senior Republicans, were invited to speak at the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington but declined.

According to a list obtained by CQ Roll Call, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was also invited to speak at Wednesdays events, but according to a spokesman, the lawmaker was in Arizona all week with a schedule full of public events.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was also asked to attend in lieu of his brother, President George W. Bush, who reportedly had to turn down the invitation as he recovered from surgery due to an arterial blockage not, as Bond suggested, he had to stay to attend to his also-ailing father.

This was truly a bipartisan outreach effort, said a spokesperson for the event in an email statement to CQ Roll Call. All members of congress were invited to attend and the Republican leadership was invited to speak. Majority Leader Eric Cantors office was very helpful in trying to find someone to speak at the event. Making this commemoration bi-partisan was especially important to members of the King family, too.

Yes as I said in a older post...Boehner and a couple House and Senate republicans were invited but only given 2 weeks notice..others were given months to prepare and clear their schedules. I wouldn't doubt they waited till the last minute knowing they wouldn't be able to attend.
It's also ridiculous to believe something you get off a politically motivated website.
Well in the end your absolutely right, don't know what I was thinkingslaphead
Yepper's all those speakers would have shown up even if they weren't going to have face time to push a political agenda!
It's one thing to try to have a rational debate even with someone who may be biased...but to have a RATIONAL debate with a hard core zealot who only see's one color and can't see beyond their nose is impossible frustrated
I'll refrain from commenting on your post's because it's always futile to have an honest discussionwaving
