so how do we in 'american' culture get back to making kids excited to learn (generally and culturally speaking of course, because I realize many individual kids love to learn)

it bleeds over into the economy when we have better educated citizens, it decreases poverty, it increases incomes which stimulates more spending which in turn creates and maintains jobs

its just win win to get back to stressing the importance of education and making it as 'american' as apple pie or reality tv,,,,

Hand over education to the PR men; they seem to be able to sell everything else!

I am sure education "maks" a difference. I would change Charter Schools into Magnetic Schools. Get Creationism out of the science class (I see they are claiming that dragons are real now, cuz it says so in the Bible); Put more feet on the front lines, for example, in Philly many librarians are now also teaching English classes.

lol, you know what? that's not a bad idea

I believe in this image driven society (unfortunately) celebs and pr people have ALOT of impact on the direction of the culture and the children and could make HUGE difference

starting with how females promote self respect and self control of their bodies and mouths

and how males promote allegiance and responsibility for family and not just 'friends'

and definitely how the media could promote family values in mainstream again, with more respectful examples of child parent relationships and parental relationships,,,

,,,,just to name few things I have considered,,lol

good suggestions ,, except about creationism, I say expose kids to altnernate 'theories',,,but that's to be expected,,,right?

anyhow, I think librarians teaching English is not a broad answer because not all librrians are necessarily well read just because they work in a library,,, nor are they equipped to TEACH,,,,

but at least someone is considering solutions,,,,

Also, I have a friend who is a lawyer for the biggest school district in Va. These jokers decided everyone needs to go to college and deep-sixed their vocational track. She is trying to get it back. A strong Voc track with outreach into the community is also appropriate, with apprenticeships, mentoring, job placement, etc.

the mentoring approach as opposed to the mere shepharding approach is also very effective, with college the goal as opposed to mere 'graduation'

especially where educational goals and opportunities are at their worst,,,

another good idea

Creationism should be taught in philosophy class, as there is little to no science in it. You like Critical thinking skills class, we need to teach that more

The librarians, in the budget, are counted in the teacher to student ration so in order to maintain realistic class sizes, principals are starting to use them as such. Toots (LOL, I like that, Tootsie)

I met a librarian filling in for a class,, I was not impressed

librarian requirements are a bit different than what's needed to know how to teach a class,,

Granted, however your choice is to utilize them and have a 1-30 ratio or not and have a 1-60 ratio.

There are A-holes all over the place. Which brings to mind two errors in our education system: 1. Woodrow Wilson's belief that we needed more ditch diggers (look it up, I know you always doubt my facts) and basing our track system on the work of Cyrl Burke- it was not until the 1970s, that someone actually looked at his data and found that interesting in 40 years of research he had the exact same numbers in each study to prove his point. Similar fraud can be found in the famous Vineland study and the research into the famous Kalikak Family. What is the point? Its in there somewhere, I believe our schools track for college prep or unskilled labour, when they should be tracking for careers.

To learn, they need reading comprehension and the ability to spell. If, there wish to get their point across.
Makes. Librarian.

Responsible parenting is basic.

Respect and the ability for teaching faculty to discipline unruly students.

State run dorms for unruly kids.

Voc Tec for good kids who don't have the aptitude for college.

You have to consider more than just aptitude, for example I scored 23 out of 25 on the college placement exams, the highest in the freshmen class. They wanted me to take a math track, I told them I hated math and refused.

I just simpled.

Kids need placed in a vocation they might enjoy.

I will lead my foster kid in that direction.

He is impaired but can learn.

I went with him to the high school workshop. We talked about 2 areas he might enjoy welding and airplane mechanics.

He liked the idea of aviation mechanic.

But, when I saw his class registration, the little spit-wad chose 2 soccer classes instead.

Monday, I'm going in and changing that.

He wants playtime or a job, he takes useful classes and learns English.
