President Obama: Trayvon Martin's death is a tragedy for America
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy for America.

Obama says he knows the not-guilty verdict reached late Saturday has elicited strong passions around the country. In a statement released Sunday, Obama is asking that all Americans respect the call for calm reflection. There have been a number of rallies and protests, most of which have been peaceful.

Obama says Americans should ask themselves if they're doing all they can to stem gun violence, and what can be done to prevent future tragedies like the Florida shooting.

George Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Martin, an unarmed teen. Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice.

Here is the full text of the president's statement, as provided by the White House:

"The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that’s a job for all of us. That’s the way to honor Trayvon Martin."

All of his speeches are probably written and approved by experts.
Of course he is pretty educated, so maybe he writes is own material.

What people see is a mad man with a kill switch, standing over the bodies of dead foreign babies, in a country he has stripped of its wealth and freedoms, and asking us to give up our guns for our protection....

It would be comical if it wasn't so serious.

I love this mentality:

- America, violence is ok, but GUN violence needs our attention.

- You can beat people to death, but shooting them is wrong.

- People should be punished for not being helpless victims

Yeh if Zimmerman had not had a gun, Travon would have beaten him into a coma.

I don't think "gun control" is an issue here. Zimmerman had a legal licence to carry and use his gun. If he had not shot Martin, then it would be Martin who would be running loose with a gun. He would have probably taken it.

Obama just mixed his Gun-Issues into his Speech!

He should check out his home town Chicago, gun free zone there.
Only 72 people shot there last weekend.

It could have been worse.

If Travon had knocked Zimmerman out (or killed him) and saw that gun, he could have taken the gun.

Now you have a teen who is doing drugs, with a gun.

If this had happened, he would not be referred to as "a Child." He would be described as an assailant or a "black male, armed and dangerous."

i've had the crap beat of me 10-15 times in my lifetime, and never "needed" a gun...

TM didn't go looking for Zimmerman, Zimmerman was hunting TM...

TM was probably looking for an apartment to break into or looking to score some drugs. He was loitering in a neighborhood where he did not live.
