Topic: What Next?... Is cursive writing dead? | |

So we have to lower our standards now so ignorant, lazy learners don't appear as stupid as they are? Thanks to the Libs and "no child left behind" we just lower the standards....Why teach? Why learn? There's always welfare...... http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57591586/is-cursive-writing-dead/ |

I still write cursive, especially on my checks. I think the loss of writing skills is a tragedy.

here is my thought on cursive
its a means of communication, but not the only means,, I feel as long as people can write in the same language (print or otherwise),,,they can communicate,, which is the whole point to me retiring cursive wont hurt my feelings, there are plenty of written forms people cant read and understand but they can rely on translators,,etc,,,to communicate them to them I cant read Spanish documents, but someone can give me a translation key and that solves that ,,, |

I sure not worry about stuff like this slowly going!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackletter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sütterlin The former I am able to read, but the latter I had to ask my Ma usually to read it for me! When she was growing up the Sutterlin was being phased out! It was definitely no longer taught in Switzerland when I went to School there, neither was the Former, had to learn that myself! |

Jest like I tells a mo-fo down here.
Education has to be earned. The more ya learn opens more doors. Can't lay blame on others your unwillingness to excel. |

IMHO I believe a beautifully penned document is worth it's weight in gold. Cursive writing is elegant. Now...is it necessary? Probably not. If the school system where I live were to remove it from the curriculum it wouldn't upset me. Schools do their best to arm our kids for the current world and cursive writing isn't crucial to surviving in today's culture.
That being said, if they did do away with it, I would not hesitate to teach my children how to write in cursive. I strongly believe that our schools are NOT primarily responsible for the education of our kids. We, as parents, are their first, and most important teacher. No one in the schools taught my children how to walk. How to ride a bicycle. How to say "please" and "thank you." I taught them that. Parents seem to be too willing to blame the shortfalls of their children's education on the schools. If you find your educational system lacking, try sitting down with your kids and teaching them the things that you believe are important for them to know. |

How does not writing in cursive equate with ignorance?
I couldn't even read my own lecture notes at times, so I switched to printing. |
