Sometimes one has to be cruel to be nice. A resident I have to work with has been at the home for 28 years. While working with her one day she was getting very upset with me. She told the nurse who was on the other side of the bed who was having as much a problem with her as me that the reason she was upset was because she was tired of having to train new cnas. The lpn who was never a cna after hearing me tell the resident that I was sorry for being a dumbass stuck up for me and told me that I was not a dumbass. So many cnas have been banned from the resident's room because for one reason or another the resident did not like them. I haven't been banned, yet. The resident concluded that I was being honest with her and that I really am a dumbass and is giving me a second chance to try to understand how she wants things done. There are so many people who can do the job better but they are just simply not around because they can't deal with her put downs. I think she finds my ignorance amazing because she hasn't ever encountered so much ignorance in one place before and it really challenges her.

So are you a real masochist or just a masochist wannabe? That is the question I have to ask myself some nights.
