Good Morning Steve, I really don't know anything about cars but my son just spent $650 on a car and a week later the transmission went and now they want $1500 to fix.

Well I would price a new one and see how much it is going to cost to fix, and then decide if it is worth your time and money.

87 ranger?

Need to know the whole story, but facts are to old, poss. lots more problems, not good on gas, I wouldn't.

You can find running beaters for 2-5 hundred, normally.
Need transportation that is what I'd do.
Something you drive 6 mo to a yr or more.
Anything serious happens, always junkers that will give 50-100
for anything.

Mechanic for 40+ yrs.

You might wanna check your local salvage yards to see what a used one would cost cause new automatics are very expensive!!!

First of all a good automatic for an 87 ranger out of another ranger should not be to expensive you could probly get one for 150 to 175 on ebay or a salvage yard. That wouldn't be to hard to get replaced. You might have to put a little TLC into this truck.

I agree with sage. The transmission would be expensive to replace and if the tranny is about to go, I'm sure more problems are brewing.

I paid $300.00 for a 1994 Pontiac Trans Sport SE and it's total crap but I've driven it since May and I've only had to put $500 into it.

You could probbley find another decent clunker for $200.00,
I tend to stay away from transmission trouble- its usually
exspensive...(ouch) ohwell
